Deep Purple & Friends Platinum Collection is a compilation by Deep Purple released in 2007 by Weton-Wesgram PC229, EU, 2007. The release (2CD), in addition to Deep Purple's songs, also includes songs by bands and artists they are friends with. An identical set of songs (differing slightly in duration) can be found on the release Deep Purple & Friends Child In Time, released by Black Box/Weton-Wesgram BB2213, EU, 2007. The set of songs below was also released as Deep Purple & Friends Vintage Vinyl (Weton-Wesgram VV036, EU, 2007), while the contents of the first CD from the above release filled the single disc version titled Deep Purple And Friends STILL ROCKIN’ AT THEIR BEST (Music Sessions/Weton-Wesgram MS040, EU , 2007). Over the years, Deep Purple have survived acrimonious splits, testy reunions, and a fire that scuppered their recording plans — but inspired classic hit ''Smoke On The Water''. You’d think by now the Purps would be desperate to sit down for a while and enjoy a nice cup of tea. Maybe this is because although there was plenty of sex and rock ’n’ roll back in the Purps’ pomp, drugs were not such a big deal. Their longevity means they’re still making records, too. You could call ''Smoke On The Water'' a heavy metal number, but it’s basically a blues song. That standard reminds, was inspired by a night in Switzerland in 1971. The band stood and watched as the local casino burnt down during a Frank Zappa concert, with smoke drifting out over Lake Geneva. Deep Purple had been due to start recording in the same venue the next day and had to change their plans. Deep Purple have metamorphosed from a psych-leaning blues-rock outfit, via prog, symphonic and pomp rock into one of the giants of hard rock and heavy metal. Some of the songs that the band created proved instant rock standards, so that few if any big name artists dared to cover such revered classics, for fear of eclipse in Purple’s nuclear glare. The originals that Deep Purple cut have stood the test of time. Deep Purple, despite all the personnel changes over the years, all the internal dissension, drug-induced lunacy and occasional personal tragedy, proved themselves consistently capable of delivering high-quality albums containing some of the greatest songs in rock. Their live shows have ranked as some of the most impressive of any era, the band’s key players boasting world-beating talent and combined showmanship. While their latterday albums may not match those of their golden era of the early 70s, the Deep Purple of the last 10 years has proven itself a re-energised outfit that has in turn generated continued interest. Deep Purple continue to set a mark for others to match, while boasting a catalogue that, at its best, few can equal or ever hope to surpass. Deep Purple are one of the few giants from rock’s golden era who continue to tread the boards with their legendary status intact.
