It's hard to credit but even the diligent efforts of all collectors have not tracked down all the Deep Purple compilations with THE COLLECTION as their title. Of the dozen or more examples on allmusic, the cover of this 2006 collection is most similar to a CD 1997 "Deep Purple - The Collection" from EMI. Of course, the track listings hardly overlap and the 1997 Collection is full of remixes, live versions, and all the other tricks to get around not owning the original versions. As such it remains as relevant as any late-era Deep Purple compilation: buyer beware, contents may vary, for collectors only. Though the band has undergone many line-up changes throughout their 40 year history, they've remained one of the most popular and relevant Classic Rock bands in Rock history. This 11 track collection contains studio tracks from their later period along with scorching live versions of four of their biggest and best: ''Highway Star'', ''Speed King'', ''Child In Time'' and the classic ''Smoke On The Water''. Nobody does it like Deep Purple. Nobody!
