20TH CENTURY MASTERS THE MILLENNIUM COLLECTION Series.
Most editions of Universal's 20TH CENTURY MASTERS THE MILLENNIUM COLLECTION Series capture the featured artist if not at their very peak, at least at a moment in their career when they were having hits. That's not the case with Deep Purple's volume. It's devoted to their '80s recordings for Mercury Records, a time that isn't considered one of their peaks, even if it did produce the fairly solid The House Of Blue Light. This does round up the highlights from those records, and it does a good job of doing it, but it's not for most listeners - especially the kind that would normally be quite satisfied by a volume of 20TH CENTURY MASTERS. The collection features the full-length album trac ks "Knocking At Your Back Door," "Perfect Stranger " and "Bad Attitude," as well as stellar live vers ions of their classic songs "Black Night," and "Child In Time." Since THE BEST OF DEEP PURPLE only concentrates on their eighties reunion of the classic Mach ll lineup, you won't hear ''Hush'' or ''Kentucky Woman'' from their early days with singer Rod Evans or their later David Coverdale led chestnuts ''Burn'' or ''Might Just Take Your Life''. Their peak seventies output is represented only by concert takes of air guitar blueprint ''Smoke On The Water'' and ''Black Night''. ''Knocking At Your Back Door'' and ''Perfect Strangers'' were decent comeback attempts, with front man Ian Gillan and six stringer Richie Blackmore in fine form, but two semi classics aren't enough to build a greatest hits collection around.
PERSONNEL: Ian Gillan (vocals, harmonica); Richie Blackmore (guitar); Jon Lord (keyboards); Roger Glover (synthesizer, bass); Ian Paice (drums).
At first glance, there's not much here for the Deep Purple afficionado unless, of course, you've got every album they've put out. As if there weren't enough compilations of Deep Purple our there. This compilation focuses on three albums: Perfect Strangers, The House Of Blue Light and Nobody's Perfect. But there are a few twists in this compilation. "Son Of Alerik", is rarely found on any compilation since it's a non-album track: it was the B-Side of the track "Perfect Strangers". Clocking in at around 10 minutes, the slow-and-bluesy arrangements of this instrumental track features an incredible performance by Mr. Blackmore! A must for the completist!!! Tracks ''Bad Attitude'', ''The Unwritten Law'' and ''Dead Or Alive'' are lifted from the The House Of Blue Light album, but the versions included are from the "vinyl mix", which had shorter versions than the original CD pressing!!! The rest of the tracks are lifted straight from their original albums. Interesting for the completist, perhaps not as much to the occasional Deep Purple listener. Deep Purple have established themselves as one of the most influential bands of all-time. And, since they are so influential, they have had numerous compilations released over the years. And in 2002, they got a compilation in UMG's ongoing 20TH CENTURY MASTERS THE MILLENNIUM COLLECTION Series. THE BEST OF DEEP PURPLE is a little bit of an exaggeration, but if you like Deep Purple, than you'll enjoy this one. Ritchie Blackmore's blazing guitars are featured here, especially on one, ''Son Of Alerik''. This 10 minute epic rarely appears on a compilation, and it's really nice to see it here. Plus, as always in the series, the sound quality is excellent. If you are a big fan of Deep Purple and have liked them for a long time, than don't ignore this one. Highly recommended for the big Deep Purple fan. It's definitely worth a listen.
