EXTENDED VERSIONS: VOLUME 2 - a live album by the British hard rock band Deep Purple recorded in Australia and Hong Kong in 2001 and presenting songs from the MK VII line, except for the song Joe South's "Hush" from the band's first album Shades Of Deep Purple from 1968. Tracks 1 and 3 recorded at Newcastle Entertainment Center, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia on 14th March 2001. Tracks 2, 5, 6, 8 and 10 recorded at Hong Kong Coliseum, Hung Hom Bay, Kowloon, Hong Kong on 20th March 2001. Tracks 4 and 7 recorded at Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on 9th March 2001. Track 9 recorded at Wollongong Entertainment Centre, Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia on 13th March 2001. All tracks taken from the Deep Purple release The Soundboard Series - Australasian Tour 2001 box set. It's a great compilation of songs where Steve Morse really shines and proves worthy of being a permanent member of the band.

As with most of the entries on the ongoing Extended Versions series, Deep Purple's second appearance in the series is similar to all the others - mostly live tracks, with a studio track or two included as well. This album was recorded live in Australia and Hong Kong in 2001. And as evidenced by the front cover photo, it's the modern-day version of the band supplying the live recordings with Steve Morse on guitar, in place of Ritchie Blackmore. In other words, you get workmanlike renditions of such Deep Purple classics as "Smoke On The Water" which includes some guitar phrases from Led Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker", "Woman From Tokyo," and "Black Night," as well as a 1988 re-recoding of "Hush," with Ian Gillan on vocals (Ian Gillan did not sing on Purple's 1968 studio hit). So as long as you're not expecting to get the definitive live or studio versions of the tracks included here, then EXTENDED VERSIONS: VOLUME 2 won't disappoint. You will happy with the fact that it consists of their more popular songs although you only wish it contained more tracks. If you're looking for a good affordable live compilation of what Deep Purple is like today this would be a wise choice.
