Deep Purple- LIVE AT MONTREUX 1996- CD- 02.05.2006-
- Montreux Sounds SA/Eagle Rock Entertainment Ltd.- 5034504132320- 400 grn
LIVE AT MONTREUX 1996 is a live album by English hard rock band Deep Purple, recorded in 1996 and released on 2nd May 2006. It released on CD and DVD. The CD and DVD release features live performances from Montreux in 1996 and 2000. Deep Purple need no introduction as one of the all-time great British rock bands. Their association with Montreux goes back to the early seventies, when their attempt to record their album Machine Head at the Montreux Casino was thwarted when it promptly burnt down, forcing them to make the album in the rooms and corridors of the Grand Hotel instead. The story was, of course, immortalized in their classic song ''Smoke On The Water'' which is the climax of this 1996 concert from the Montreux festival. This is first live album of the Mark VII lineup by legendary British Hard Rock band that outshines the official live album from the Purpendicular Tour Live At The Olympia '96. Great performances by everyone, but sadly another in a long line of live releases by the Morse era line-up that contain virtually the same setlist, year after year after year ... The focus is always on the classics, with a few newer tracks in to promote whatever current album they're supposed to be promoting ...
PERSONNEL: Ian Gillan – vocals; Steve Morse – guitar; Roger Glover – bass; Jon Lord – keyboards; Ian Paice – drums.
Few bands are more closely associated with Montreux than Deep Purple and there was simply no other contender when it came to choosing the act to headline the closing night of the Montreux Festival in 1996. This is one of the first live performances together with Steve Morse, their then new guitar player. First released in 2006 on CD and DVD (DTS Surround Sound) on Eagle Media. The CD version has two bonus tracks, whereas the DVD has five (other) bonus tracks recorded in 2000 at the same place. Of course, the best-known (and just plain "best") Deep Purple incarnation will be what many fans regard as the MK II lineup of Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice. But by the early to mid-'90s, an on-again, off-again reunion of this lineup had fizzled out upon the exit once more of Blackmore, their founding guitarist. Instead of calling it a day, Deep Purple eventually found a permanent replacement in former Dixie Dregs and Kansas guitarist Steve Morse, and have been rocking and rolling ever since. Although not released until 2006, LIVE AT MONTREUX 1996 shows that the Morse-era Purple lineup, even in this early stage, had no problem cranking out the classics. Kicking things off with one of Deep Purple's heaviest tracks, "Fireball," the 12-track set balances the classics ("Black Night," "Woman From Tokyo") with newer/Morse co-penned tunes ("Ted The Mechanic," "Hey Cisco"). With so many countless live Deep Purple titles having hit the shops over the years, LIVE AT MONTREUX 1996 is hardly a necessary release, but it is sure to appeal to the diehards who need to buy everything Deep Purple.
