Deep Purple- THE BATTLE RAGES ON …- CD- 02.07.1993/02.09.1995- RCA/BMG International- 743211542029- 400 grn
THE BATTLE RAGES ON … is the fourteenth studio album by the English hard rock band Deep Purple, released on 2nd July 1993. It is the last album recorded with the band's classic Mk II line-up, which reunited for a second time (the first reunion being for 1984's Perfect Strangers). Even though Mike DiMeo was initially chosen as the singer for the album after Joe Lynn Turner was fired, Ian Gillan eventually returned to the band in late 1992 and had to rework much of the material already existing for it, which had been intended for Joe Lynn Turner and Mike DiMeo. After his firing Joe Lynn Turner quoted Ritchie Blackmore referring to the album as The Cattle Grazes On. Ritchie Blackmore allegedly became infuriated at perceived non-melodic elements and left the band for good after a show on 17th November of that same year in Helsinki, Finland. American guitarist Joe Satriani joined Deep Purple as a temporary replacement for the remainder of the tour. Deep Purple... a conflicting band. It took a decade for Ian Gillan and Ritchie Blackmore to bury their animosities for the first time, almost five years later, and Ian Gillan declared a clear “never again” to the press. But never say, three and a half years later, he'll be available again. One reason may be the intercession of bass player and coproducer Roger Glover. However, only on condition that he has to encounter Ritchie Blackmore in the studio as rarely as possible. Most of the songs are already recorded, only lyrics and vocals are missing. Ian Gillan complements both in Peter Maffay's Red Rooster Studio - the CD is ready. In this respect, the CD title is also to be understood as an overall band concept with a twinkling eye. Surprisingly... we like the final product. Not equal with the hammer Perfect Strangers, but much better than the semi-finished and cheesy produced The House Of Blue Light or the disappointing Slaves And Masters.
PERSONNEL: Ritchie Blackmore – guitar; Ian Gillan – vocals; Roger Glover – bass; Jon Lord – keyboards; Ian Paice – drums.
Personality clashes are as much a part of Deep Purple as Ritchie Blackmore's penchant for black clothing. A revolving door of members resulted in different lineups being given their own labels. The most popular version of Purple has always been the Mark II model: Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, Roger Glover, and Ian Paice. This particular quintet has gotten together and had members leave in each of the past three decades, and THE BATTLE RAGES ON … was that lineup's contribution to the '90s. Personal differences aside, THE BATTLE RAGES ON … picks up on the kind of chemistry that made albums like Machine Head and Perfect Strangers classics. The title song is a great rocker, “Anya” extremely atmospheric, “Time To Kill” extremely catchy, “Ramshackle Man” slightly bluesy, “Solitaire” balladesk. In between are the bulky “Lick It Up” and “Talk About Love” and the hectic “Twist In The Tale”. Whoa!! Three decades on, Ritchie Blackmore's range on guitar is still impressive as he goes from playing with an arrogant swagger on "One Man's Meat" to a fleet-fingered flamenco intro that kicks off the epic "Anya." Elsewhere, "A Twist In The Tale" plays out with the same kind of intensity as "Highway Star," while the hard-driving title track proved to be prophetic as Ritchie Blackmore departed the band.
