ANTHOLOGY is a compilation album by the English hard rock band Deep Purple, containing material by MK I (1968–1969), MK II (1969–1973), MK III (1973–1975) and MK IV (1975–1976) line-ups. It was released as a double vinyl album and double-cassette in June 1985, and included a few previously unreleased tracks and mixes. This compilation was never re-issued on CD. A 2-CD set, released by EMI on 15th Fenruary 1991, was titled THE COMPACT DISC ANTHOLOGY, but featured different songs and only previously released material. The first made-for-compact disc Deep Purple collection, THE COMPACT DISC ANTHOLOGY offers a satisfying, extended glimpse at the seminal English hard rockers without the extra fat of the comprehensive Shades quadruple box set. And despite THE COMPACT DISC ANTHOLOGY's mid-80's cutoff date surprisingly little essential material is omitted from this set. Five tracks from the mostly forgotten Mark I lineup make the cut, including the group's first charting single "Hush," but are quickly and summarily eclipsed by the arrival of Gillan and Glover on such timeless classics as "Black Night," "Child In Time," "Strange Kind Of Woman," "Highway Star," etc. Curiously, the ubiquitous "Smoke On The Water" is featured here in its Made In Japan live version, rather than the studio original - a decision which may upset some consumers. Finally, ten mostly well-picked examples of the David Coverdale-fronted Mark III formation bring the set to a close.
PERSONNEL: Ritchie Blackmore / guitar; Jon Lord / organ, keyboards, backing vocals; Ian Paice / drums; Rod Evans / lead vocals; Nick Simper / bass, backing vocals; Ian Gillan / vocals; Roger Glover / bass; David Coverdale / vocals; Glenn Hughes / bass guitar, vocals; Tommy Bolin / Guitar and vocals.
This is a very good compilation of the first Marks of the Depp Purple (from I to IV). What is missing ? Here and there a song or two from each album... Missing some of their great cover songs from their debuts : "Hey Joe", "River Deep, Mountain High" to name a few. Their best Mark I song, ''April'' (the longest studio track of their whole catalogue) is missing, which is really a pity. It is Deep Purple's most prog track ever released as well. From Mark II? Some great forgotten songs as "The Flight Of The Rat", "Hard Loving Man", "Fools" and "Lazy". The albums "Stormbringer" and "Come Taste The Band" are really over represented. The selection of the songs is not always the best one for these. No "Comin' Home" nor "Lady Luck" from Come Taste The Band and no "Lady Double Dealer" from Storbringer. Those songs were some of the best of these efforts. Of course, there are none of the great Deep Purple songs ignored here. Their best two songs ever: "Child In Time" and "Highway Star" are here. The emblematic "Black Night" and "Smoke On The Water" as well of course. Since "Burn" & "Mistreated" are represented live, they could as well have chosen a live version for "Strange Kind Of Woman" which was a great moment of their concerts. All in all, this compilation THE COMPACT DISC ANTHOLOGY is very good, but the CD format would have allowed about twenty minutes of additional music. The first tracks are from the Psychedelic Pop/Soft Rock Era. Some people say this is the most prog era of Deep Purple. Then go some classics of the classical formation of almost every album until Come Taste The Band. The following tracks are from the Coverdale/Hughes era and Tommy Bolin on guitar. But this compilation is that does not resume all Deep Purple's career. Overall, it's a good Boxset, if you don't want to get into Deep Purple, but you must have Machine Head and Deep Purple In Rock (If you don't have them yet...)
