THE HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHT is the twelfth studio album by English rock band Deep Purple, released on 16th January 1987 by Polydor Records. It was the second recording by the reformed Mark II line-up, and the sixth studio album overall by this formation of the band. Though it was considered a disappointment upon its release (indeed, its production was much too sleek at times, and it lacked the creative daring of Perfect Strangers), 1987's THE HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHT has actually stood the test of time just as well, if not better, than its predecessor. The second effort from the re-formed Mark II lineup, this album showed Deep Purple searching for an '80s-flavored hit single, and by doing so, sounding uncomfortably similar to guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's other band, Rainbow. Virtually all of the record's first half suffers from this (especially "The Unwritten Law" and "Bad Attitude"), but things improve with the Eastern-flavored melodies of "The Spanish Archer" and "Strange Ways." The eerie sound textures explored on the latter evoke memories of classic Deep Purple, and finally allow some space for soloing from Ritchie Blackmore and keyboardist Jon Lord. And the telltale lyrics to the equally interesting "Mitzi Dupree" (based on a true story), are vintage Ian Gillan, as the singer combines James Bond-style international intrigue with high comedy.
PERSONNEL: Ian Gillan – vocals, harmonica; Ritchie Blackmore – guitars; Roger Glover – bass; Jon Lord – keyboards; Ian Paice – drums, percussion.
As a teenagers some people gave up on Deep Purple with the Stormbringer album. Them really disliked the direction they took at the time and so they wrote the band off. Done, or so they thought. So now some 35 years after this album was released, they decided to get a couple of Deep Purple albums out of curiosity. So they purchased Perfect Strangers and THE HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHT on a whim. Hey it was cheap. Wow, they are really surprised! The classic band (that means Mark II) had reunited for an all too brief period in the mid-80s while they was listening to Black Flag, Metallica, The Butthole Surfers, The Cure etc. and made a couple of really good albums! THE HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHT dips occasionally into a little hard rock cheese, but most of this album rocks and shows a lot of style that found quite enjoyable. No it doesn't sound like the Machine Head or Fireball days, but boys (Blackmore, Lord, the Ians and Rog) really pulled off a surprisingly good album here. Ian Gillan's somewhat flat vocal performance and Jon Lord's nearly absent Hammond organ (mostly replaced by cheesy 80's synths), are the main flaws of an LP which was obviously spoiled by technology... Because, as they say, sometimes more is less, and vice-versa. That being said, and in spite of its defects, THE HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHT is Deep Purple's last great album: tracks like "Dead or Alive", "The Spanish Archer", the afore-mentioned "The Unwritten Law", and "Strangeways" all prove it. The songs are memorable and played well. Some people missed out on this at the time but now they liked this album so much they went and bought Purples 2017 release Infinite. And this goes against popular opinion that THE HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHT is every bit as good as Perfect Strangers. They glad took a chance now.
