DEEPEST PURPLE: THE VERY BEST OF DEEP PURPLE is a compilation album by the English hard rock band Deep Purple, released on 4th July 1980 on LP. It features the original hits of Deep Purple before their 1984 reunion. Aided by a TV advertising campaign it would become Deep Purple's third UK No. 1 album, displacing Queen's The Game. It took a new release from AC/DC - something called Back In Black - to cut short DEEPEST PURPLE's tenure at the top. In 1984 this compilation additionally was published on CD. It was at one point the longest album ever released as a single LP, but it was overtaken by Def Leppard's Hysteria album in 1987. Being a 60 minute vinyl LP, Noise Reduction was used and Warner Brothers Records lowered the volume considerably, as well as altering the EQ on all tracks to fit both sides equally. This also marked the debut of "Demon's Eye" for the North American release, where it was replaced by "Strange Kind Of Woman" on Fireball. All songs from this album appeared in 2000 on Rhino's The Very Best Of Deep Purple, along with three additional songs. In 2010 a 30th Anniversary Edition of this compilation was released (in the UK, 25 October and US, 2 November). It contains four additional tracks, two of them from the Mark I & IV eras, plus a bonus DVD featuring TV performances, newly created clips containing previously unreleased video footage and an exclusive track-by-track commentary from founding member Jon Lord.

While they started out in the late '60s as a psychedelic band, delved into progressive rock, and even recorded an album in collaboration with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Deep Purple achieved their greatest success as a strong, straightforward, hard rock band, anchored by the powerful guitar work of Ritchie Blackmore and the show-stopping vocals of Ian Gillan (and later David Coverdale). From 1970's Deep Purple In Rock to 1974's Stormbringer, Deep Purple were one of the most popular hard rock bands on Earth, and DEEPEST PURPLE: THE VERY BEST OF DEEP PURPLE captures the band at the top of their form on some of their best-known songs. Selections include "Smoke On The Water," "Space Truckin'," "Highway Star," "Speed King," "Woman From Tokyo," "Fireball," and many more. In the '70s, Deep Purple carved their niche in hard rock royalty with a heavy guitar-driven sound. The monstrous riff that opened "Smoke On The Water" became the first thing many aspiring guitarists learned to play. Songs like "Woman From Tokyo" and "Highway Star" epitomized the screaming rock vocalist of the '70s, and many of Deep Purple's finest tracks were graced by Ian Gillan's voice (who also lent his wail to the Jesus Christ Superstar album.) David Coverdale, who later sang in Whitesnake, also provided front man duties for a while. Both "Space Truckin'" and "Highway Star" were party favorites, the latter's breakneck speed and ripping guitar leads making it a testosterone-charged force to be reckoned with. In addition to its classic appeal, DEEPEST PURPLE: THE VERY BEST OF DEEP PURPLE is a veritable shrine to the guitar work of Ritchie Blackmore. DEEPEST PURPLE was also Deep Purple's third No.1 album, after Fireball and Machine Head. Now, with this 30th Anniversary Edition, this juggernaut of a compilation has been supercharged for the 21st century.
