Deep Purple- EXTENDED VERSIONS: THE ENCORE COLLECTION- CD- 18.07.2000-

The title of Deep Purple's EXTENDED VERSIONS: THE ENCORE COLLECTION is something of a misnomer - extended versions, after all, conjure up visions of 12" remixes and protracted studio workouts. Here, however, there's nothing more (or extended) than an unhelpfully non-annotated collection of live recordings dating from Tommy Bolin's time with the band. Indeed, anybody owning either the On The Wings Of A Russian Foxbat or King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents live sets already owns Extended Versions and then some, rendering this album little more than a budget-priced sampler for the main attraction. All of that aside, anybody familiar with the studio versions of these songs will agree that a few of them certainly are extended - "Burn" clocks in at eight-plus minutes, Don Nix's "Going Down" at seven, and Bolin's guitar solo lasts more than ten - sufficient to have it tagged as a track in its own right on the album cover. However, the fact that his name is misspelled "Tomy" offers at least a glimpse into the amount of care and attention that went into this collection. Not very much.
PERSONNEL: David Coverdale – lead vocals; Tommy Bolin – guitar, vocals; Jon Lord – keyboards, organ, synthesizers, backing vocals; Glenn Hughes – bass, vocals; Ian Paice – drums, percussion.
The BMG Special Products release of Deep Purple's EXTENDED VERSIONS: THE ENCORE COLLECTION is an edited version of material culled from the group's 1976 King Biscuit Flower Hour performance. The ten song CD captures the Mark IV Deep Purple live on 27th February 1976, in Long Beach, California, and in Springfield, Mass., on 26th January 1976. The original King Biscuit Flower Hour broadcast is noteworthy as it is the only authorized concert release featuring the Mark IV Deep Purple lineup. The recording is taken from tour dates in support of Deep Purple's Come Taste The Band album. American born guitarist, Tommy Bolin, doesn't attempt to fill the void left by moody axe slinger Ritchie Blackmore. Tommy Bolin, who weaved his solo career around his commitment with Deep Purple, worked his own fretboard magic on the older Deep Purple songs. Tommy Bolin's strength was his ability to branch out in a variety of musical styles, as evident on such legendary Deep Purple cuts as "Highway Star" and "Smoke On The Water". Out front, David Coverdale's inspired singing sparks the group, while bassist Glen Hughes adds strong backing vocals. The ever steady Jon Lord isn't limited to adding keyboard fills, as his work adds another dimension to the Deep Purple sound. Opening with a smoking version of "Burn", followed by a short take on "Lady Luck", Purple proudly storm from the stage. Bolin's "This Time Around" adds depth to the setlist, while the band breaks into covers of "I'm Going Down" and "Georgia On My Mind". The disc closes with a five-minute plus swing on "Love Child". A better photograph of the group should have graced the cover sleeve and the credits for the EXTENDED VERSIONS: THE ENCORE COLLECTION release are limited to just the song titles.
