PHOENIX RISING (subtitled Coverdale • Hughes • Bolin • Paice • Lord) is a combo DVD/CD live album by the Mark IV line-up of Deep Purple, released on 11th May 2011. It includes rare live tracks from Mk IV history, Rises Over Japan, a (30 minute) concert film directed by Tony Klinger, Gettin' Tighter, an 80-minute new music documentary about the band's 1975/1976 tour, and some extras. After Ian Gillan and Roger Glover left Deep Purple decided to continue and entered one of the most controversial, exciting and extreme phases of their career. Back then unknown vocalist David Coverdale and bass player Glenn Hughes joined the band. The following albums Burn and Stormbringer showed they could maintain the same levels of the previous incarnation of the band while maintaining "classic album status". When Ritchie Blackmore decided to leave the band, they surprisingly decided to continue, recruiting guitarist Tommy Bolin. The Mk IV lineup released the great album Come Taste The Band, and played in front of immensely large audiences at the peak of their glamorous lives...until excesses affected the band and Tommy Bolin tragically died of a heroin overdose. Deep Purple were then officially split up.

PHOENIX RISING is a multi-item package focusing on the final lineup of Deep Purple's classic period. This line-up, known as MK IV recorded only one studio album, Come Taste The Band, released in October 1975. The PHOENIX RISING project includes a documentary called Gettin' Tighter, which tells the story of MK IV, as well as a video show of the album's tour and a CD with audio from that performance. PHOENIX RISING features eight tracks on CD recorded at shows that took place in Tokyo in 1975 and in Long Beach, in the United States, in 1976. It is worth remembering that in the same period in which Purple released Come Taste The Band, Tommy Bolin, who was already a respected guitarist, with stints in the James Gang and a key figure in two jazz rock classics – Spectrum (1973) by Billy Cobham and Mind Transplant (1975) by Alphonse Mouzon, he released his first solo album, Teaser, which hit stores. PHOENIX RISING features a version of “Homeward Strut”, a track featured in Teaser. The tracks on PHOENIX RISING are among the best live records of Deep Purple's career. Even though the band was going through a turbulent period, the quality of the material is impressive. The excellent audio quality makes the changes applied by Tommy Bolin to the songs even more striking. Tommy Bolin does his own solos, keeping nothing that had been recorded by Blackmore. For the most part, listening to this material is very rewarding, and testifies, again and again, to the power of the MK IV. PHOENIX RISING is a document of a time when live albums were actually recorded live, without the addition of later studio overdubs.
