THIS ALBUM IS DEDICATED TO TOMMY BOLIN.
LAST CONCERT IN JAPAN is an album by Deep Purple released on 16th March 1977 in Japan and in 1978 in Europe. Dedicated to Tommy Bolin, it records the last Japanese concert of the Mark IV-lineup that included Bolin. It was recorded on 15th December 1975 at the Tokyo Nippon Budokan and achieved gold certification in Japan. Deep Purple took to the road for many sell out shows of the Far East in 1976 and recorded what would become the final international album of their run with Warner Bros., LAST CONCERT IN JAPAN. Filled with blazing guitar licks from the late great Tommy Bolin, searing vocals from David Coverdale and an arena powered rhythm section courtesy of Deep Purple, the band opens the CD with the hugely popular "Burn". More powerful tracks like "Smoke On The Water" and "Highway Star" round out this super rare live disc that has never been released in the USA until now. First time limited edition compact disc!
PERSONNEL: Jon Lord – keyboards, Hammond organ, backing vocals; Ian Paice – drums, percussion; David Coverdale – lead vocals; Glenn Hughes – bass, vocals; Tommy Bolin – guitar, lead vocals on "Wild Dogs".
When Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple in early 1975, many fans figured that the band was over. But with the arrival of worthy replacement Tommy Bolin, the band was suddenly back in business with the oft-overlooked Come Taste The Band release. What the prior members of Deep Purple didn't know, however, is that their new guitarist had a serious drug problem, which hampered his playing by the time the group landed in Japan for a series of shows in December of 1975. With Bolin allegedly having no feeling in one of his arms on the night of a Deep Purple gig at the Budokan, the show was to be taped for a future release. As evidenced by his playing on Come Taste The Band (as well as his work with Billy Cobham and the James Gang), Bolin was an exceptionally skilled guitarist, which only makes his ragged playing on LAST CONCERT IN JAPAN even more glaring. That said, the rest of the band sounds respectable, especially on such tracks as "You Keep On Moving." But when Tommy Bolin takes center stage to perform "Wild Dogs" (a highlight from his great solo debut, Teaser), his inept playing is at its most evident. In subsequent interviews, Deep Purple members even slagged off LAST CONCERT IN JAPAN. For a much better Bolin-era Deep Purple recording, be sure to check out the group's King Biscuit Flower Hour release. This is an underrated album and not nearly as bad a performance as makes it out to be. Tommy Bolan’s playing is stellar especially during ''Wild Dogs'' and we like the way Coverdale interacts with the audience. The recording sounds like a bootleg A little muddy but very enjoyable none the less.
