MK III THE FINAL CONCERTS, alternatively entitled Archive Alive, is a live album by Deep Purple, recorded during the band's 1975 European tour in support of the Stormbringer album. It was released in 1996. This double CD release is culled from the final performances from Deep Purple MK III featuring Ritchie Blackmore before he left to launch his new band Rainbow with singer Ronnie James Dio. The album features for the most part material from the last concert of the tour held at the Palais des Sports, Paris 7 April 1975, with a few tracks taken from two shows in Graz, Austria, 3 and 4 April. Deep Purple’s management must have realized that something was amiss when they elected to have the final shows of their April 1975 tour professionally recorded. Their intentions were to have some material in the can in the event that growing tensions would to split up the band. Unbeknownst to everyone, Ritchie Blackmore had already made his decision to quit in order put more effort into his new project, Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow. Deep Purple's fans were gladdened to receive previously unheard recordings from such historically significant shows. While Ritchie’s playing is good overall, he does seem a bit more inconsistent than usual. The improvisations seem to meander without purposeful direction. Also, Purple’s tight cohesive grooves appear to have been sacrificed for a battle of egos and showboating. Collectors may still want to purchase this to hear a rare MK III live performances of “Gypsy”, as well as “Stormbringer” with Blackmore on guitar. Far from one of Deep Purple’s better live collections, but still an interesting curiosity piece.

Unlike some bands that stick to the same lineup from the beginning to end of their careers, Deep Purple are one of the few rock bands to retain their following despite numerous lineup shuffles over the years. One of the most drastic moves was jettisoning Ian Gillan and Roger Glover in favor of David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes - a move that was supposed to help expand the group musically. While Deep Purple did incorporate more soul/R&B sounds on such subsequent releases as Burn and Stormbringer, it did not help elongate the shelf life of the lineup, as Ritchie Blackmore himself was gone with the wind by early 1975. As the title of MK III THE FINAL CONCERTS attests, this 11-track live set features selected performances from the final moments of Deep Purple's Mk III lineup - and as heard on such standouts as the title tracks from both ''Burn'' and ''Stormbringer''. The lineup was still strong enough to blow the roof off any arena. But as with the majority of arena rock acts of the early to mid-'70s, Deep Purple could turn into a woefully self-indulgent beast in concert: case in point, painfully long versions of such classics as "Smoke On The Water" and "Space Truckin'" (the latter of which almost reaches 20 minutes), which feature way too much mind-numbingly meandering jams/solos that manage to sap the power of the succinct original versions. To their credit, though, Deep Purple were certainly not the only notable rock band at the time indulging in overboard live improv. Ritchie Blackmore’s last shows with the band feature songs from Mk III’s plus early classics Deep Purple's fans and more including two alternate versions recorded live in 1975.
