DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK is the fourth studio album by English rock band Deep Purple, released on 5th June 1970. It was the first studio album recorded by the Mark II. Work on DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK began shortly after Gillan and Glover joined the band in June 1969, with rehearsals at Hanwell Community Centre. The music was intended to be loud and heavy, and accurately represent the group's live show. DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK was the band's breakthrough album in Europe and peaked at No. 4 in the UK, remaining in the charts for over a year. By contrast, it under-performed in the US, where the band's Mark I albums had been more successful. An accompanying single, "Black Night" reached No. 2 in the UK, becoming their highest charting single there. The album has continued to attract critical praise as a key early example of the hard rock and heavy metal genres. In 1995 a remastered and revised 25th Anniversary Edition of the album was released by EMI. The album was remastered by Roger Glover, adding "Black Night", "Jam Stew", a new mix of "Cry Free", and remixes of "Flight Of The Rat" and "Speed King".

After satisfying all of their classical music kinks with keyboard player Jon Lord's overblown Concerto For Group And Orchestra, Deep Purple's Mark II version made its proper debut and established the sonic blueprint that would immortalize this lineup of the band on 1970's awesome DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK. The cacophony of sound introducing opener "Speed King" made it immediately obvious that the band was no longer fooling around, but the slightly less intense "Bloodsucker" did afford stunned listeners a chance to catch their breaths before the band launched into the album's epic, ten-minute tour de force, "Child In Time." In what still stands as arguably his single greatest performance, singer Ian Gillan led his bandmates on a series of hypnotizing crescendos, from the song's gentle beginning through to its ear-shattering climax and then back again for an even more intense encore that brought the original vinyl album's seismic first side to a close. Side two opened with the searing power chords of "Flight Of The Rat" - another example of the band's new take-no-prisoners hard rock stance, though at nearly eight minutes, it too found room for some extended soloing from Blackmore and Lord. Next, "Into The Fire" and "Living Wreck" proved more concise but equally appealing, and though closer "Hard Lovin' Man" finally saw the new-look Deep Purple waffling on a bit too long before descending into feedback, the die was cast for one of heavy metal's defining albums. The opening 'Speed King' will rip your heart apart! With its fast guitar and swarming keyboard playing. Is 'Speed King' the first trash metal song? Always it was. But anyway, forget that this album is simply of legendary status now along with Fireball and Machine Head they are the essential Deep Purple albums. The 25th Anniversary Edition of DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK adds some nice bonuses, the stomping single ''Black Night'' is an obvious necessity, but the studio outtakes, including the hard-drivin' leftover ''Cry Free'', and a piano version of ''Speed King'' make for cool alternate listens. A jam-packed booklet and jewel case imprinted with the band's signatures for a 3-D effect rounds out the set.
