The Allman Brothers Band- BEGINNINGS- CD- 1973/2003-
- Capricorn Records/PolyGram Records, Inc.- 731453125926- 400 grn
CAPRICORN CLASSICS Series.
BEGINNINGS is a 1973 reissue of The Allman Brothers Band's first two albums, The Allman Brothers Band and Idlewild South, made to capitalize on the band's popularity since those records had first come out. BEGINNINGS also includes extensive liner notes by writer Jean-Charles Costa that gave many fans their first coherent view of the band's history, as well as useful guidelines for how to tell Duane Allman's guitar parts from Dickey Betts'. The front cover depicts them at one of their many famous performances At The Fillmore East. For BEGINNINGS, the band's debut album was remixed by Tom Dowd, replacing Adrian Barber's original mix. Originally issued in 1973, BEGINNINGS was a two-record set that repackaged the Allman Brothers' first two releases, 1969's The Allman Brothers Band and 1970's Idlewild South. The music captures the Allmans in their early stage and features soon-to-be deceased members Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. Highlights include the jam-fest "Whipping Post" (which would soon take on an on-stage life all its own), as well as the slightly psychedelic "Dreams," the soaring "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed," and the road anthem "Midnight Rider." The roots of Southern Rock can be minutely inspected on BEGINNINGS.
PERSONNEL: Gregg Allman – piano, organ, lead vocals; Duane Allman – acoustic guitar, slide and lead guitars; Dickey Betts – lead guitar; Berry Oakley – bass guitar, vocals and harmony vocals, backing vocals; Jai Johanny Johanson – timbales, percussion, drums, congas; Butch Trucks – drums, timpani, percussion; Thom Doucette – harmonica, percussion.
This Allman Brothers classic comes home to Capricorn Records sporting remastering from the original master tapes and packaging authentic to the original LP release (2 complete LPs on 1 CD). For once, a record label actually gives us more bang for the buck, combining two indisputable classics - 1969's self-titled debut and the 1970 follow-up Idlewild South - onto one glorious CD. Five urgent notes kick off Spencer Davis's "Don't Want You No More," and by the time that searing instrumental morphs into Gregg Allman's superb slow blues "It's Not My Cross To Bear," it's clear these Georgians mean business. Everyone talks of the Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon covers, the furious twin leads of Duane and Dickey Betts, Gregg's soulful voice and formidable organ, the percussion attack of Jaimoe and Butch Trucks, but what about the songwriting skills? Just start with "Cross To Bear," "Whipping Post," "Dreams," "Revival," "Elizabeth Reed" - are you kidding? BEGINNINGS, by the first edition of The Allmman Brothers Band, is (in case older fans couldn't figures it out) is a no-brainer ( in the most classic sense of the word). Consisting of the groups first two legendary albums, it is literally the very birth of "Southern Rock". Picking stand-outs from this killer is a little like splitting hairs. Be that as it may, this fans choices are "It's Not My Cross To Bear", "Trouble No More", "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed", "Whipping Post", and ''Hoochie Coochie Man". Listening to this recording (along with Live At The Fillmore East), you really sense the near-telepathic rapport between the members. These two records blend gritty Blues, Southern Soul, and Psychedelic Rock into an exciting creation, and they serve notice: The Allmans was contend for the title of best American Rock & Roll band. They were such a tight band that could really cook. There'll never be another one like them.
