CAPRICORN CLASSICS Series.
WIN, LOSE OR DRAW is the fifth studio album and sixth overall by American rock group The Allman Brothers Band. Produced by Johnny Sandlin and the band themselves, it was released on August 22, 1975 in the United States by Capricorn Records. It was the last studio album to feature bassist Lamar Williams and pianist Chuck Leavell. The band had previously released Brothers And Sisters in 1973 to critical and commercial success. The group toured the following year, attracting large crowds and earning substantial amounts of money, all while internal tension grew among the members. Vocalist and keyboardist Gregg Allman and vocalist and guitarist Dickey Betts released solo albums — The Gregg Allman Tour and Highway Call, both issued that fall — which prompted speculation on the band's unity. When the band regrouped to work on WIN, LOSE OR DRAW, unresolved issues arose in rehearsals. The band was particularly critical of Allman's decision to move to Los Angeles, as well as his tabloid relationship with pop star Cher. With miscommunication and anger at an all-time high, the band pieced together the album over a period of several months, in stark contrast to their usual recording methods. Band members often could not be present in the studio at the same time. While not exactly on par with such classics as 1969's The Allman Brothers Band or 1970's Idlewild South, The Allman Brothers' 1975 release, WIN, LOSE OR DRAW, at least demonstrated that the band was still together, despite a two-year layoff between albums.
PERSONNEL: Gregg Allman — organ, clavinet, acoustic guitar, lead vocals; Richard Betts — lead guitar, slide guitar, acoustic guitar, lead vocals; Chuck Leavell — piano, electric piano, Moog synthesizer, clavinet, background vocals; Lamar Williams — electric bass; Jaimoe — drums, percussion; Butch Trucks — drums, congas, percussion, tympani; Johnny Sandlin — acoustic guitar, percussion; Bill Stewart — percussion.
Unquestionably the record's highlight is the album-opening cover of Muddy Water's "Can't Lose What You Never Had," but other cuts such as the instrumental "High Falls," the title track and "Nevertheless" also prove to be standouts. Longtime fans could sense trouble brewing behind the scenes, and their instincts proved right--the Allmans would take a three-year sabbatical after one more album, the live Wipe The Windows. An unexpectedly poor showing from the group, considering the two-year lag between albums and what had come before. Despite a good cover of Muddy Waters' "Can't Lose What You Never Had" - highlighted by a great Dickey Betts solo - as an opener, there's not much here that's first-rate. The band sounds lethargic, although they still play decently. The title track and Dickey Betts' instrumental "High Falls" are among the few highlights, decent but unexceptional performances sparked by Betts' playing which is engaging even on the loser tracks like "Louisiana Lou". The album's main fault lies not with what it is, but what it could have been, and who it's from - as a debut album from a new band, it would be excusable and acceptable. But perfectly pleasant album. Not as good as their previous records, which are all Southern Rock/guitar classics and therefore hard to compete with, but not a failure either. An average Allman Brothers album is still a fun listen and belongs in every guitar rock collection.
