The Doors- LIVE NEW YORK, PBS CRITIQUE, APR 28/29 1969- CD- 2016- RoxVox Production- 5292317201729- 400 grn
On April 28 and 29, 1969 The Doors graced the PBS Critique stage. At a touch over 41 minutes, it’s a short show. There’s two parts to this really. There’s The Doors performing, and The Doors interviewing. Richard Goldstein opens with an introduction, then he interviews The Doors for near 15 minutes after a few songs. He’s nervous as all Hell, you can tell, and only wants to talk to Jim. He never asks any of the other guys a question, but Ray, Robbie, and John jump in at least once. Jim’s stoned, smoking the end of huge cigar as he wears dark sunglasses, but you can see his eyes are barely open. The song selection is really good. Enjoy the “Alabama Song/Back Door Man” jam. Jim’s in star mode during the performance and kicks it in on the last tune. The Doors: LIVE AT THE PBS CRITIQUE isn’t a bad experience, but the interview segment and timing of it brings it down to mid-shelf level. This is a must have for any Doors fan. Quality of the recording is as expected for the time period. Clean, balanced audio. The Doors were interviewed by Richard Goldstein for a special edition of the series PBS Critique titled “A Profile of Jim Morrison and The Doors – On and Off Stage” for broadcast on WNET in New York on June 25, 1969. The band had performed several songs for the special the day before, Apr. 28, 1969, including “Tell All The People,” “Alabama Song,” “Backdoor Man,” “Wishful Sinful,” “Build Me A Woman” and “The Soft Parade.”
