21 blues, rock 'n' roll, jazz and folk songs that infiltrated the dark, twisted world of The Doors and featuring Muddy Waters, Billie Holiday, John Lee hooker, Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley & more. In the west coast mid-'60s scene, The Doors were a strange hybrid of boozy blues and sinister psychedelic sweetness. This CD traces the roots of this sound featuring classic tracks which the band covered or were inspired by. Compiled by Dave Henderson (Mojo) who also provides the sleevenotes. THE ROOTS OF THE DOORS went beyond blues, of course, so there's stuff on here like Brecht's "Alabama Song," Elvis' "Heartbreak Hotel," Chuck Berry's "Carol" and a 50's instrumental called "Harlem Nocturne" by the Viscounts, which does indeed sound very Doors-ish, except for the sax; its brooding, sinister atmosphere is reminiscent of the "Strange Days" album. There's little Willie John's "Fever," a familiar song but an unfamiliar version, to me at least, but excellent; and Josh White's stunning take on "St. James' Infirmary." There's also the usual blues suspects: John Lee Hooker ("Crawling King Snake), Leadbelly ("House of the Rising Sun") and no less than three(why so many?) Muddy Waters tracks, only one of which, "Got my Mojo Working," is among his best. Also here are two of Robert Johnson's dark masterpieces; his haunted, violent lyrics surely appealed to Morrison: "Early this morning you knocked upon my door, And I said Hello Satan, I believe it's time to go. Me and the Devil was walking side by side, I'm gonna beat my woman till I get satisfied." Howlin' Wolf's "Back Door Man" isn't included, oddly enough; instead we get Sara Martin's "Strange Lovin' Blues," the song from which it derived according to the liner notes, but apart from the appearance of the phrase "back door man," there is no connection. Twenty one songs and overall a very enjoyable collection, of interest to any Doors fan or anyone interested in blues or other roots music. Well worth a listen.
