Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison are two of the biggest icons of the counterculture, and there remain some parallels to be drawn between them, not to mention their inclusion in the infamous ’'27 Club'’. However, it turns out that the two occasions in which the pair actually met were utterly disastrous, and their characters could not be more contrasting. The late 60s was the dawn of the era of the superstar collaboration. But for every Blind Faith or Crosby, Stills & Nash there were a dozen drunken on-stage jams featuring rock’n’roll’s biggest stars that have slipped down the back of the sofa of history. One of the most infamous was the fleeting union between Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison on stage at hip New York club Steve Paul’s The Scene in the spring of 1968, while Janis Joplin looked on. They first crossed paths at a late-night jam session at the New York club on 7th March 1968. Interestingly, Hendrix was recording the entire jam on his trusty reel-to-reel tape recorder, Nagra, and on some bootlegs, you can listen to the recordings under the name of ‘'Morrison’s Lament’'. Peace and love wasn’t on the agenda when what should have been a supreme meeting of minds disintegrated into a chaotic brawl that ended with Joplin smashing a bottle on Morrison’s head. This wasn’t the last time Hendrix and Morrison met each other, however. Nearly a month later, on April 2nd in Montreal, Canada at the Paul Suavé Arena, Morrison found himself interrupting a Hendrix performance once again. The musiciansship of Jimi Hendrix often found its most daring expression in live performance. Many of the songs collected here are widely known in their recorded versions, which continue to stand not only as rock classics but also as statements that at once embody and transcend their period. Such was Hendrix's improvisatory skill, however, that again and again he extended and developed those tunes in concerts fabled for their astonishing mixture of wildness and control. This collection of live recordings has the added benefit of the rare pairing of Hendrix with The Doors' Jim Morrison.
