SOME GIRLS: LIVE IN TEXAS ’78 is a live concert film by The Rolling Stones released on 18th November 2011. This live performance was recorded and filmed in 16 mm during one show at the Will Rogers Auditorium in Fort Worth, Texas on 18 July 1978, during their US Tour 1978 in support of their album Some Girls. The Rolling Stones 1978 tour of the USA in support of that years SOME GIRLS album is considered by fans to be one of their very best. The tour followed immediately on the release of the SOME GIRLS album and by the time the band arrived in Texas in mid-July the album had hit the No. 1 spot on the US charts. The tour took a back to basics approach, with the band and their music very much at the forefront and little or no elaborate staging. This concert is typical of the tour with The Rolling Stones delivering a raw, energetic performance in front of a crowd who are clearly loving the show. Many of the tracks from SOME GIRLS are included in the live set with a sprinkling of Stones classics from earlier albums.
PERSONNEL: Mick Jagger – lead vocals, guitar, electric piano; Keith Richards – guitars, backing and lead vocals; Ronnie Wood – guitars, backing vocals, pedal steel guitar; Bill Wyman – bass guitar; Charlie Watts – drums; Ian Stewart – piano; Ian McLagan – organ, electric and acoustic pianos, backing vocals; Doug Kershaw – violin.
This album is stunning, it's unquestionably the most underrated live album and quite possibly the most underrated album in The Stones' discography. If you're reading this, buy this album. The Stones were absolutely on fire for this show. This album has a stripped down, raw feeling to it. There are no backup singers, no horn section, just The Stones, Stu on piano, and Ian McLagan on piano/organ/synth. This album singlehandedly proves that anyone who says The Stones completely lost it once Ron Wood joined the band are wrong. If The Stones had kept up like this, no one would even be making that argument. The two Chuck Berry covers on here, ''Let It Rock'' and ''Sweet Little Sixteen'' are both great. Nobody did Chuck Berry better than The Stones. The versions of ''Honky Tonk Women'' and ''Starfucker'' on here are both great, as are the few Stones standards on the album. However, it's the tracks from SOME GIRLS where this album really shines. ''When The Whip Comes Down'' and ''Respectable'' are absolutely incendiary, ''Beast Of Burden'' and ''Just My Imagination'' are incredible, and the versions of ''Shattered'' and ''Miss You'' better than the album version. The intro to ''Miss You'' is done solely on guitar and it sounds incredible, and Bill Wyman's bass breakdown is awesome. Version ''Shattered'' being substantially faster than the studio version, and again all of the music is done solely on guitar and it's incredible. Seriously, buy this album. The video is good, but a better album than a video.
