Blues Traveler- TRAVELERS & THIEVES- CD- 1991/1997- A&M Records, Inc.- 0082839537322- 400 grn
TRAVELERS & THIEVES is Blues Traveler's second album, released on A&M Records in September 3, 1991. The album is listed only as TRAVELERS due to the full name being split across two drawings, one on the cover and one inside the CD liner notes. The liner notes include a poem titled "Of Travelers & Thieves," written by Jonathan Lindsey Sheehan, brother of bassist Bobby Sheehan. Every song rocks! John Popper and the boys created one of the greatest CDs in the history of rock. Popper is a man with a lot on his mind, but when he reaches "The Best Part," his verbosity approaches a Walt Whitman-like exuberance, and guitarist Chan Kinchla is right with him, contributing sweet fills here, Pete Townshend-style strumming there. And as for the rhythm work of bassist Bobby Sheehan and drummer Brendan Hill, as Popper says, "it's all in the groove." They sure can play their axes--might even be tolerable as a boogie band. But "All In The Groove" is just a classic-rock line. John Popper's interest in fun is strictly rhetorical, and his rhetoric is so prolix they only play three-hour sets so he can get all the words in. As a Jack Bruce fan he thinks it's groovy when his rhythm section hustles out more notes than a good groove needs.
PERSONNEL: John Popper – vocals, harmonica, 12-string acoustic guitar, calymba, various barks, squeaks, growls, whistles; Chan Kinchla – electric guitar, 6-string acoustic guitar; Bobby Sheehan – bass; Brendan Hill – drums, percussion; Gregg Allman – Hammond B3, vocals; Chris Barron – backing vocals.
Another in a long line of killer CDs from this fantastic veteran band! Blues Traveler’s first album was highlighted by John Popper’s incredible harmonica playing. At times it sounded like a saxophone or synthesizer—the runs were that fast and crisp. Popper’s skill attracted notable fans such as Jerry Garcia, Carlos Santana and Gregg Allman, who lends his voice and organ to “Mountain Cry” on TRAVELERS & THIEVES. This sophomore effort was released in 1991 and contains some of their finest, most interesting moments. There always seems a point in every Blues Traveler album where the flow is broken and perhaps one or two songs make the cut that probably should not have. No such problems on TRAVELERS & THIEVES. This album gets lost in the shuffle when looking at their work as a whole, but many of Blues Traveler's most cherished songs make their appearance here. John Popper hits his stride as a songwriter on ''Sweet Pain'', ''Optimistic Thought'', ''The Best Part'', and ''Bagheera''. Although Blues Traveler made its mark through a absurdly extensive touring schedule in its early years, it was in TRAVELERS & THIEVES that the songwriting and musical talent that culminated in the wildly successful Four truly shines for the first time. Surprisingly, the harmonica that brought the band so much attention is less prominent on this second album. The result holds up better to repeated listenings and reaffirms the promise of their debut. TRAVELERS & THIEVES is essentially about change. The songs change tempo and key suddenly and fluidly, with a solid rhythm section backing Chan Kinchla’s guitar and Popper’s harmonica. An underlying theme of optimism and social change runs through the album. Every song is strong, both lyrically and musically, with the new world order epic “Onslaught,” the anti-war “Tusk” and the life-embracing “Sweet Pain” as standouts. Blues Traveler has proven again they are worthy of their devoted admirers and suitable for the long, strange trip of the next decade. The choice of ''All In The Groove'' as the initial single release was puzzling, but Blues Traveler always seems to mess that up on every album. If you like Blues Traveler you need this one.
