LEGENDARY 1970 RADIO SESSION !!! PLUS BONUS TRACKS INCLUDES RARE 25 MINUTE INTERVIEW WITH DUANE ALLMAN.
Broadcast live from the studios of WBCN FM, in Boston on November 21st, 1970. This three man off-the-cuff session came about by accident. The Grateful Dead had a gig at Sargent's Gym, on the University Campus in Boston, later in the day - which, in parentheses, was the first show at which Ned Lagin sat in with The Dead. Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir dropped by the local FM station for a chat in the morning. The Allman Brothers Band meanwhile were playing the Boston Tea Party across town. Duane Allman had a similar idea, and popped in too. Early on the morning of the 21st, Duane Allman, Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir drop by WBCN-FM in Boston and play a little acoustic music over the air, hosted by DJ Charles Laquidara. Together they played a little live, acoustic music over the air, and had a right good natter while about it. The results of this rare but legendary recording can be heard on this CD for the FIRST TIME. The sound isn't pristine but the music is superb and everyone seems to be having a good time. Listeners will too. Deadheads won't be surprised to find Garcia and Co. starting the show with Marty Robbins' ''El Paso'' - a song The Dead had practically called their own since 1969. The country flavor continued with versions of Johnny Cash's ''Big River'', and Porter Wagoner's ''Let Me In'' ends the session. In-between there are delightful versions of a few Dead standards (albeit all covers) and a classy ''Ragtime Workout'' on which Garcia really illustrates just what a superb acoustic fingerpicker he always was. He impresses again on the version played of British folk-blues guitarist Davey Graham's ''Angie'' - an instrumental so difficult to perform, few players would take the chance of attempting the number during a spontaneous session - Garcia plays the piece perfectly without a bum note to be heard! This all too short set (running at just 30 minutes) however is augmented on this disc with one of the most fascinating, fluid and relaxed interviews Duane Allman ever gave. The Duane Allman Radio Hour was, unlike the Boston session, very much a pre-planned event, which was initially supposed to be an Interview/Live Music Session with Duane playing solo. However, he forgot his guitar unfortunately, and so between the chat, album versions of a number of Allman tracks were played (including perhaps his best known performance, on Derek & The Dominos ''Layla''). So while we don't have what would certainly have been a magnificent solo show, we do have the quite extraordinary interview itself - which gives this CD a much more respectable 55 minute playing time in total.
