THE ROLLING STONES REMASTERS Series.
FLASHPOINT is a live album by the English rock band The Rolling Stones, their first live album by the group since 1982's Still Life. The album was recorded in 1989 and 1990 on the Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle Tour and released on 2nd April 1991. The tour and the two studio tracks recorded for FLASHPOINT were the last for bassist and long-time member Bill Wyman as a Rolling Stone. Recorded across North America, Europe and Japan, FLASHPOINT is also the first Rolling Stones release of the 1990s and, unlike previous live sets, includes two new studio tracks: "Highwire" and "Sex Drive". Although the live selections are mostly familiar hits mixed in with new tracks from Steel Wheels, FLASHPOINT also includes lesser-known songs like "Factory Girl" from 1968's Beggars Banquet and "Little Red Rooster", featured here with special guest Eric Clapton on guitar. FLASHPOINT was recorded using binaural recording. This gives the effect that the concert audience is behind the home listener. The audience cheer track was taken from The Rolling Stones' 1970 live album Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!, complete with an audience member shouting out a request: "''Paint It Black'', ''Paint It Black'', you devil !!!" In 1998, FLASHPOINT was remastered and reissued by Virgin Records, and again in 2009 by Universal Music.

Anyway, while this album is not perfect it sounds damn amazing considering The Stones had been going for about 30 years at this point. Some of these renditions are even better than the studio versions, especially ''Miss You''. The bonus tracks are a nice addition, ''Highwire'' is a little weak but ''Sex Drive'' is a definite high point of the 90s Stones, and is far funkier than most of their previous attempts at being funky. OK, it is sort of a greatest-hits-live, album, mainly. "Sympathy For The Devil", "Brown Sugar" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash" lose all of their menace and play more like generic hit singles. The attitude of Steel Wheels carried through to the tour, obviously. Nonetheless, the performances and production are much better than the last live album, for sure. Could have done without "Can't Be Seen", but appreciate the rather bizarre inclusion of "Factory Girl" recorded on the 6th July 1991 show at London’s Wembley Stadium. "Sex Drive" is a very obvious James Brown cop, while "High Wire" is interesting lyrically, anyway. A killer version of ‘Little Red Rooster’ has a guest appearance from Eric Clapton, and was recorded in Atlantic City, New Jersey on penultimate gig of the North America Tour. Seen by over 3 million people in the USA and Canada, 500,000 in Japan, and by 2.4 million fans in Europe where the tour was renamed Urban Jungle, and the stage slightly changed. The North American and Japanese legs of 1989 and early 1990 were named for the Steel Wheels album. The European Urban Jungle shows of later that year had a completely new set design. This live recording FLASHPOINT is pretty damn good. Go listen to it.
