STILL LIFE (American Concert 1981) is a live album by the English rock band The Rolling Stones, released on 1st June 1982. Recorded during the band's 1981 American tour, it was released in time for their 1982 European tour. The album cover is a painting by Japanese artist Kazuhide Yamazaki, whose work inspired the tour's stage design. It used to be said there were only two sure things in the world: death and taxes. Add a third - a live Rolling Stones album every three years. In what's essentially become a flourishing, if decidedly spotty subcatalog (the notable exception being the stellar Get Your Ya-Ya's Out, culled from the band's 1969 performance peak), 1982's STILL LIFE is the band's fourth live collection and marks the beginning of a long stretch of laurel-resting. Though recorded in support of the band's Tattoo You album, eight of the scant ten Stones tracks here are either hits from their early years or covers of favorite Rock and R&B chestnuts. Though they would go on to have an artistic comeback, this collection sometimes finds them struggling against being their own tribute band.
PERSONNEL: Mick Jagger – lead vocals, guitar; Keith Richards – guitar, backing vocals; Ronnie Wood – guitar, backing vocals; Bill Wyman – bass guitar; Charlie Watts – drums; Ian Stewart – piano; Ian McLagan – keyboards; Ernie Watts – saxophone.
Like Love You Live before it, STILL LIFE showcases The Stones as pure entertainers, although the band adds enough rhythmic grit to keep the record from sinking into pure showbiz formula. Nevertheless, there isn't nearly enough grit to make it rock as hard as Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! or even Love You Live, depressingly enough. STILL LIFE is an unexceptional live document of their 1981 American tour. The performances are too polished and even a bit mechanical sounding by their standards. The raw Rock & Roll danger of their earlier live recordings has been replaced with an almost corporate predictability. It's also a rather truncated sampling of their live set and only includes a single track "Start Me Up" from the excellent Tattoo You record they were promoting at the time. Their cover of "Going To A Go Go" received a lot of FM airplay at the time and the album still sold well. STILL LIFE falls someplace between The Stones' peerless concert disc Get Your Ya Ya's Out! and the sludge-saturated mess that was Love You Live. The hits heavy set list offers few surprises, although it intros and outros with canned versions of Duke Ellington's ''Take The A Train'' and Hendrix' ''Star Spangled Banner''. Servicable takes on oldies era staples ''Under My Thumb'', ''Time Is On My Side'', and (of course) ''Satisfaction'' are sprinkled with a few newer tracks like the band's last juggernaut ''Start Me Up'' and Motown covers ''Just My Imagination'' and ''Going To A Go-Go''. For a change, Mick actually sings more than he mumbles, even if bandleader Keef ratchets up the tempo on every song to "let's get it over with" velocity. Only one selection exceeds the five minute mark, but this band never indulged in gratuitous guitar or drum solos. It's all done before you can pop open your third can of brew...a welcome, single disc souvenir in an era clogged with overlong double concert platters.
