MORE HOT ROCKS (BIG HITS & FAZED COOKIES) is a compilation album by The Rolling Stones released in December 18, 1972 on London Records. The album was a follow-up to the successful Hot Rocks 1964–1971. When Hot Rocks 1964–1971 proved to be a big seller, there was never any doubt that a successor would follow. However, initially the project was to feature previously unreleased (or more accurately, discarded) material and be titled Necrophilia. Artwork was prepared and the album made it as far as the mastering phase when it was recalled and something a little more practical was compiled. The result was MORE HOT ROCKS (BIG HITS & FAZED COOKIES). This was the second "post-contract" compilation released under the aegis of London/ABKCO Records after the termination of The Stones relationship with ABKCO and Decca Records. Because of the nature of the contract, The Rolling Stones lost all control over their pre-1971 recordings and this album was released without their input or consent. ABKCO and Decca would continue to release such un-authorized albums over the next several decades. In August 2002 MORE HOT ROCKS (BIG HITS & FAZED COOKIES) was reissued in a new remastered SACD digipak by ABKCO Records with the addition of three bonus tracks. This product is a hybrid Super Audio CD (SACD) and has been encoded with two layers: one is a normal CD program and the other is an SACD of the same repertoire. The product is playable on both SACD-compatible machines as well as standard CD players. Hot Rocks 1964-1971 covers most of the monster hits from The Stones' first decade that remained in radio rotation for decades to come. MORE HOT ROCKS (BIG HITS & FAZED COOKIES) goes for the somewhat smaller hits, some of the better album tracks, and a whole LP side's worth of rarities that hadn't yet been available in the United States when this compilation was released in 1972. The material isn't as famous as what's on Hot Rocks 1964-1971, but the music is almost as excellent, including such vital cuts as "Not Fade Away," "It's All Over Now," "The Last Time," "Lady Jane," the psychedelic "Dandelion," "She's A Rainbow," "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing In The Shadow?," "Out Of Time," "Tell Me," and "We Love You." The eight rarities are pretty good as well, including their 1963 debut single "Come On," early R&B covers of "Fortune Teller" and "Bye Bye Johnnie," great slide guitar on Muddy Waters' "I Can't Be Satisfied," and the soulful 1966 U.K. B-side "Long Long While." The first volume Hot Rocks 1964-1971 sold tons more than this one, but can't touch it in quality. Hot Rocks 1964-1971 is a greatest hits package and nothing more. Granted the hits are indeed great, but put together, the experience is kind of like listening to a Classic Rock radio station. However, MORE HOT ROCKS (BIG HITS & FAZED COOKIES) is wonderful! It strikes me more as a labor of love than a greatest hits package. even though we know full well, it was a total attempt at cashing in. What makes us love this collection are two factors. First, we get lots of the young, hungry, angry and savage Stones. The Stones who loved Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters. And was there any other band that used the mellotron better than these guys did in 1966 and 67? Indeed, the first Hot Rocks 1964-1971 has the Big Hits, but if you want to get more into the essence of the best Rock and Roll band in the world, this is a pretty good place to go.
