HOT ROCKS 1964–1971 is a compilation album by The Rolling Stones released by London Records in December 20, 1971. It became The Rolling Stones' best-selling release of their career and an enduring and popular retrospective. The album includes a mixture of hit singles, such as "Jumping Jack Flash", B-sides such as "Play With Fire", and album tracks such as "Under My Thumb" and "Gimme Shelter", the last of which has become one of The Rolling Stones' most popular and highly regarded songs. The album artwork depicts five nested silhouettes of the band members' profiles taken by rock photographer Ron Raffaelli in 1969. A photograph of the band at Swarkestone Hall Pavilion, taken by Michael Joseph in 1968, was printed on the back cover of the vinyl release. The album is the best selling of the numerous Decca/ABKCO releases after The Rolling Stones lost control of their pre-1971 catalogue to their former manager Allen Klein. As with all of such releases, The Stones had no control over the collection or its release. In August 2002, HOT ROCKS 1964–1971 was reissued in a new remastered CD by ABKCO Records. This two-CD set is both a lot more and a bit less than what it seems. It is seven years' worth of mostly very high-charting - and all influential and important - songs, leaving out some singles in favor of well-known album tracks, and in the process, giving an overview not just of The Rolling Stones' hits but of their evolving image. One hears them change from loud R&B-inspired rockers covering others' songs ("Time Is On My Side") into originators in their own right ("Satisfaction"). Then into tastemakers and style-setters with a particularly decadent air ("Get Off Of My Cloud," "19th Nervous Breakdown"), and finally into self-actualized rebel-poets ("Jumpin' Jack Flash," "Midnight Rambler") and Shaman-like symbols of chaos. On its initial release, HOT ROCKS 1964–1971 sold well, not only as a unique compilation but also as a panorama of the '60s. The only flaw was that it didn't give a good look at The Stones' full musical history, ignoring their early blues and psychedelic eras. There are also some anomalies in HOT ROCKS 1964–1971' history for the collector - the very first pressings included an outtake of "Brown Sugar" featuring Eric Clapton that was promptly replaced. Up until Forty Licks came along 30 years later, HOT ROCKS 1964–1971 was the most definitive collection of Stones hits and album tracks available. And it's still an essential part of their catalog and history, a two-disc summation of their first seven years told chronologically and with some of the greatest Rock 'N' Roll songs ever made. Flawless from start ("Time Is On My Side") to finish ("Wild Horses").
