THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST is the 6th British and 8th American studio album by the English rock band The Rolling Stones, released in December 8, 1967 by Decca Records in the UK and by London Records in the US. It is their first to be released in identical versions in both countries. The album's title is a play on the "Her Britannic Majesty requests and requires" text that appears inside a British passport. The band experimented with a psychedelic sound on THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST, incorporating unconventional elements such as Mellotron, sound effects, string arrangements, and African rhythms. The prolonged recording process was marked by drug use, court appearances, and jail terms by members of the band. The original LP cover features a lenticular image by photographer Michael Cooper. THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST received mixed reactions from critics and members of the group itself. The album was criticised as being derivative of the contemporaneous work of The Beatles, particularly their June 1967 release Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, with the similarities extending to the LP's cover. Following the album's release, The Rolling Stones abandoned their psychedelic style for a stripped-down return to their roots in blues music.
PERSONNEL: Mick Jagger – lead vocals, backing vocals, percussion, maracas, tambourine; Keith Richards – electric guitar, backing vocals, acoustic guitar, bass guitar; Brian Jones – Mellotron, saxophone, vibraphone, jew's harp, flute, organ, electric dulcimer, recorder, backing vocals, harp; Bill Wyman – bass guitar, lead vocals, organ, backing vocals; Charlie Watts – drums, tabla; Nicky Hopkins – piano, organ, harpsichord; John Paul Jones – string arrangement; Marianne Faithfull, Ronnie Lane, Steve Marriott – backing vocals; Eddie Kramer – claves.
Part druggy experiment, part musical rivalry with the Fab Four, and a total anomaly in The Rolling Stones' catalogue, THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST contains at least three trippy classics in "Citadel," "She's A Rainbow," and "2000 Light Years From Home." That it also contains an extensive sample of Bill Wyman snoring and an eight-minute stoned jam that begins with the timeless phrase "Where's that joint?" is a measure of THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST's breadth of genius and folly. There's a lot going on here - try comparing the wayward Eastern atmospheres of "Gomper" to anything on Beggars Banquet, and marvel that you're listening to the same band. The fact that Jagger and Richards could still come up with the unimpeachably charming "She's A Rainbow" (baroque pop at its finest) and a fair stab at heavy R&B in "The Lantern," while attempting to negotiate the band's rocky passage through Flower Power is a tribute to their vision, their perseverance, and their drugs of choice. Clearly their answer to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, or at least "All You Need Is Love," THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST is actually as sloppy an artifact as Flowers. But even at their most goofy '60s moment, The Stones came up with some good songs. "She's A Rainbow" is fine second-tier pop-psychedelia, while "2000 Light Years From Home" can still transmit a pretty handsome case of the Fear. Bill Wyman's "In Another Land" is as thin as his phased vocal, but still plays better than "Sing This All Together (See What Happens)." Not the most essential Stones disc by a long shot, but one that fans will want to own sooner or later.
