BETWEEN THE BUTTONS is the fifth British and seventh American studio album by the English rock band The Rolling Stones, released on 20th January 1967 in the UK and on 11th February in the US as the follow-up to Aftermath. It reflected The Stones' brief foray into psychedelia and baroque pop balladry during the era. Multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones abandoned his guitar on much of the album, instead playing a wide variety of other instruments including organ, marimba, vibraphone, and kazoo. Piano contributions came from two session players: former Rolling Stones member Ian Stewart and frequent contributor Jack Nitzsche. As with prior albums, the American and British versions contained slightly different track listings. The American version of BETWEEN THE BUTTONS, which includes "Let's Spend The Night Together" and "Ruby Tuesday", is on the 2003 and 2012 versions of Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. The Stones plunged deeper into the waters of original songwriting on BETWEEN THE BUTTONS, leading to a golden age of classic albums including Let It Bleed, Beggar's Banquet and Exile On Main Street. The obscure songs on this tight package show The Stones coming into their own as composers. Between the melodic balladry of "Back Street Girl" and Mick Jagger's Dylanesque inflections on "She Smiled Sweetly," BETWEEN THE BUTTONS found The Stones in a strata far beyond covering Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly. Although none of these developments ranks with The Beatles' contemporaneous sonic experiments, the Fabs' bad-boy counterparts showed differing degrees of whimsy and sass.

The Rolling Stones' 1967 recordings are a matter of some controversy. Many critics felt that they were compromising their raw, rootsy power with trendy emulations of The Beatles, Kinks, Bob Dylan and psychedelic music. Approach this album with an open mind, though, and you'll find it to be one of their strongest, most eclectic LPs, with many fine songs that remain unknown to all but Stones devotees. The lyrics are getting better (if more savage) and the arrangements more creative and shows their hidden romantic side at its best. The best tracks on the American edition were the two songs that gave the group a double-sided number one in early 1967: the lustful "Let's Spend The Night Together" and the beautiful, melancholy "Ruby Tuesday," which is as melodic as anything Mick Jagger and Keith Richards would ever write. The clearest example of this is BETWEEN THE BUTTONS, which has pop banger after pop banger. If The Beatles had written half of these songs it would have been considered some of their best work. That's not to shade The Beatles, just to praise The Stones. It's definitely a bit uneven, and the UK version is just inferior to the US version, but as far as 60's pop albums, you can't go wrong with this one.
