12 X 5 is the second American studio album by the English rock band the Rolling Stones, released on 17th October 1964 following the success of their American debut England's Newest Hit Makers. It is an expanded version of the EP Five By Five, which had followed their debut album The Rolling Stones in the UK. The five songs on the British EP were fleshed out with seven additional tracks to bring the work to LP length. Among the additional tracks were the UK single-only release "It's All Over Now", a cover of a Bobby Womack song that was the group's first UK number one hit, an alternative version of "Time Is On My Side", which appears in a more familiar form on other albums, and three Jagger/Richards originals. 12 X 5 includes material recorded by the Stones at Chicago's Chess Studios (home to the band's idols Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf) on their first US tour. Though this document of the group's early R&B period kicks off with a couple of covers from unsurprising sources (Chuck Berry's "Around And Around,") Mick and Keith waste little time in displaying their own compositional acumen. The acoustic-based, bluesy "Good Times, Bad Times" harkens back to even earlier, more seminal Stones influences than Berry, as does the instrumental "2120 South Michigan Avenue," where the blues-obsessed Jagger's harp is featured a-la his hero Little Walter. The downbeat, Arthur Alexanderish "Congratulations" is an effective expression of romantic melancholy, complete with acoustic guitar solo. The slide guitar chords on "Grown Up Wrong" echo another early blues influence, Elmore James. The milestones on this album are two R&B covers to which the Stones take more than a rote approach, "It's All Over Now" and the majestic "Time Is On My Side," which they make completely their own.

Man, how many of these early Rolling Stones albums have "Under The Boardwalk" in them? STOP IT. Just be grateful that the majority of these tracks are covers. The evolution from blues to rock accelerated with The Rolling Stones' second American LP. They turned soul into guitar rock and a great instrumental blues-rock jam. On the other hand, the group originals (except for the propulsive "Empty Heart") are weak and derivative, indicating that the band still had a way to go before it could truly challenge the Beatles' throne. The original songs shows a distinct weakness in their songwriting. As amateurish as the songwriting sounds you could never guess that the band would go on to much greater things. As musicians however there is definitely a lot of talent. As a band they gel considerably well, the spontaneous energy on the jamming ''220 South Michigan Avenue'' and the stomping ''Grown Up Wrong'' leap straight out at you. Most of the pieces that made the band so iconic are here but there was room for improvement. Jagger hasn't quite found himself as a singer, he hasn't got that bite in his phrasing. Not much else to say, it's another US release that's a grab-bag of tracks from various UK releases. Mostly covers, mostly blues.
