Duane Allman, Bob Weir & Jerry Garcia- THE NEW ENGLAND JAM: The Boston Broadcast, 1970- CD- 2015-

The Allman Brothers Band and The Grateful Dead, the two greatest jam bands in history, have often crossed paths. As evidenced by, among others, the recent 'radio broadcast' of the 1973 New Year's Concert at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. But listening to Duane Allman and Jerry Garcia cross their magical six strings (on this occasion strictly acoustic), with the rhythm of Bob Weir to support them, is much more: on November 21, 1970 the two bands both found themselves playing in Boston, and after their respective concerts, the magnificent three met late at night in the WBCN local radio studios to improvise and have fun: the result is this set of songs interspersed with chats in which the common roots of the musicians emerge, among the country & western of ''El Paso'' (Marty Robbins) and Johny Cash (''Big River''), the traditional (''I Know You Rider'') and the folk of British origin (Davey Graham's ''Angie''). A true historical document, despite the relaxed and informal atmosphere of the session. The 1970s saw the rapid evolution of live performance as the most exciting area in music. In the latter half of the 1960s, the ballroom scene and free concerts in Golden Gate Park broke new ground, and by 1969, 400,000 festival goers were descending on Woodstock, New York. Over the course of the 70s bands moved first into arenas, then stadiums, and ran enormous, sprawling tours accompanied by private jets and fleets of limousines. But for anyone looking to see the best live music in America in the 70s, there were two acts that remained essential: The Grateful Dead, and The Allman Brothers Band. Of course, what both bands featured in common was the one of the two greatest living American guitarists: Jerry Garcia of The Dead and Duane Allman of the Allmans. Their shared love of roots rock and respect for each other's musicianship led The Dead and The Allmans to often occupy the same stage, and after Duane Allman's untimely death in 1971 Garcia's playing alongside his late counterpart's band became a fitting tribute. And so music fans everywhere received a phenomenal gift on the 21st of November, 1970 when both bands played in Boston. After their respective shows had wrapped up, Jerry Garcia and Duane Allman convened in the small hours at the city's WBCN studios where, accompanied by Dead guitarist Bob Weir, they jammed the night away in a live broadcast for the station's listeners.
