One controversial album stands above the masses when the term ''rock opera'' is mentioned. No, it isn't a story about a teenage angst or a future straight out of a science fiction magazine. No, it is the story of the passion and death of Jesus Christ. Andrew Lloyd Webber was nineteen when he met Tim Rice. The pair came together to write the play Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, on commission from a high school. This musical was a hit. Upon being met with this success, the pair set to work again, to create what is their greatest masterpiece. JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR was written as a musical, but recorded as an album. It was introduced on 16th October 1970. The title song, ''Superstar'' and ''I Don't Know How To Love Him'', both became huge hits. The opera was first portrayed onstage in June of 1971, by the students of Southfold High School in Southfold, NY. On 12th October 1971, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR was released on Broadway at the Mark Hellinger Theatre. In the following years, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR has been re-released in many different forms, in many different mediums. This album contains all the original recordings. All twenty-four of them, remastered onto two compact discs. Powerful, in-depth, and moving lyrics drive the motivation's of the character's individual view-points of Christ's final hours. Most of the action centers around Judas Iscariot's growing discord with Christ. He allows his fear of death to overcome his trust in his companions.Jesus Christ, Mary Magdalene, and the Apostle Peter, also have key main rolls. This album is simply incredible. This tale, in one form or another, should be experienced by everyone, regardless of religious belief or musical taste.

Jesus Christ has been very good to Andrew Lloyd Webber. Indeed, The Rock Of Ages inspired one of the greatest stories ever sold and launched composer Lloyd Webber to musical theater superstardom. Lyricist Tim Rice hasn't done too bad for himself, either. This Lloyd Webber-supervised "definitive" recording, undertaken in London in 1996, was finally released in America to coincide with the show's 2000 American revival on Broadway. JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR creators as the first rock opera, often had a decided Brill Building bent that's dated about as well as Don Kirshner's leisure suits. Perhaps not surprisingly, this JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR redux leans more on the over-the-top operatics that characterize the composer's mega-hit Phantom Of The Opera than its original cast album and soundtrack album roots. While rocker-for-hire Alice Cooper takes a refreshing, if familiar, vaudevillian turn on "King Herod's Song", much of the remaining music has been rendered notably big and serious. Just the sort of thunderous, orchestral pomp that has gained Lloyd Webber a worldwide following and a knighthood.
