Eric Burdon And The Animals- ATHENS TRAFFIC LIVE: Deluxe Edition- CD & DVD- 2005-
- SPV Recordings/SPV GmbH- 693723709321- 500 grn
Eric Burdon seems to be living a second youth. After the excellent My Secret Life of 2004 comes this unexpected live, which anticipates only a few months the new album scheduled for next January. A handful of songs that immediately make two things clear: Eric Burdon is still one of the most important, most particular voices that rock has ever given birth in its history, and the impact of his live songs, well supported by a host of new "animals", is still as exciting and engaging as it once was, even when, as in this case, it draws on many songs from his most recent repertoire. However, the beginning is entrusted to a great classic by John Lee Hooker which, if ever there was a need, reminds everyone of the black heat that every note of Burdon's voice releases, while Dean Restum's guitar begins to heat up. "When I Was Young" is instead a classic written by Burdon in 1967, a song that still makes you shiver even in this incendiary third millennium version. "Factory Girl" is an Irish traditional that takes some clothes from the ancient wardrobe of "The House Of The Rising Sun", returning the unique sound of those Animals that certainly cannot be forgotten. Great space, then, for the album that the tour is promoting. In fact, there are five excerpts from Eric Burdon's latest recording effort in this concert in Athens: "Once Upon A Time" and the cover by Leonard Cohen, "In My Secret Life" the most intense moments, the first with his transport and with those keyboards like Animals, by Martin Gerschwitz, the second which becomes a long and suggestive suite, where the only thing that doesn't fully convince are the final choruses that are a bit off topic. "The Night", written by Burdon with Don Evans while he was traveling for the tour that formalized the band's reunion in the early 80s, which materialized with the 1983 album Ark (which then included the song in question), regains the its potential thanks to a drier sound, while still retaining a pinch of the "cursed" sound of those years. If "Little Queenie" is a tribute to Chuck Berry and rock'n'roll, well performed but not exciting, the energetic blues rock of "Tobacco Road" was much more in Burdon's strings, which could not better conclude this vital live which, while not giving away anything new, gives us back something precious that we never wanted to lose.
PERSONNEL: Eric Burdon - screamed and growled vocals, percussion; Dean Restum - guitar, background vocals; Martin Gerschwitz - keyboards, violin; Dave Meros - bass; Bernie Pershey - drums.
It is great to hear Eric Burdon on this set. It is a really unique live show that highlights Eric's recent studio albums. It seems that Eric Burdon is back and better than ever. His last 3 solo albums have been vibrant and full of life. It shows on this live show. a powerful performance. If you want to hear something different and hear Eric now this is a nice package. It comes in a beautiful book package. It is hardbound with plenty of pictures and comes with a DVD too. If you are a fan, picking up this one when it is in sale. It will become hard to find and expensive in the future if you do find it. Give it a try!
