Jools Holland is the most versatile fine spirit among the now quite numerous big band leaders. Whether as a New Wave veteran with Squeeze, as a virtuoso pianist or as the moderator of the great music talk series "Later With Jools Holland": whatever the smart gentleman touches turns to pure gold. In terms of art in particular, he doesn't make any pandering compromises. Now his great BBC show is also running in this country. So what could be more obvious than serving the Krauts a rich compilation of new and not-so-new jams? Nothing. And that's exactly why this outstanding compilation hits the mark. The Londoner knows better than anyone else how to lure his guest stars off the beaten track and onto new highways. Apparently completely effortless, he encourages everyone without exception to take a musical sweetheart hour beyond their usual terrain with his passion. Magical. The tracks themselves move lightly in various genres. Sometimes swing, a lot of blues, piano songs or rock. Variety is guaranteed. Ready for the name dropping madness? Here we go. The opener is unspectacular but intense. The late George Harrison made one of his last public appearances with "Horse To The Water". A refreshing amount of George and no Beatles characterize the sound. Holland's class as an arranger is also evident here. With "Seventh Son" Sting, who has been on the back burner for a long time, finally reaches the level of the days of the "Blue Turtles" that were believed to be lost. Queen Mary Faithfull doesn't have to get used to the usual level at all. Even the great Screamin' Jay's thousand-covered voodoo bone saw "I Put A Spell On You" blossoms unexpectedly fresh in the hands of Mica Paris and David Gilmour. Just hear how Jools' piano joins forces with the Floyd guitar, then again with the vocals and whips the track forward violently. It's not hard to get inspired with such an elegant template. The actually somewhat anemic original version of the 1997 album "Pop", which has been underestimated compositionally to this day, is no longer needed. Vocally and vocally, the Dubliner shows exactly that artistically bursting passion and maturity that finally does justice to the world-class vocal talent. Together they casually lead the tearjerker, which is somewhere between nasty mania, hard sex and real romance, into the "Tower Of Song". At first, Mr. Holland lets his piano bubble wonderfully jammed up. Bono's lascivious lasciviousness leaves the animal in the man enough room for a mephisto-phallic seduction including sobbing, drooling, gasping and finally cumming. He always walks on the red line and doesn't run the risk for a second of overacting or vulgar machoism. Blue Eyed Blues at its very best. At the end of the record there can only be one conclusion: May Jools invite many more friends and keep this TV show running forever. Collaborations the way the world needs them. And here his first FRIENDS album including a lot of great artists (see tracklist) … and you will her this great mixture between Big Band Jazz and Rhythm & Blues… It´s hot, baby !!!
