Buddy Guy- SKIN DEEP- CD- 22.07.2008-
- Silvertone Records/Zomba Recording LLC/Sony Music Entertainment- 886973431627- 400 grn
SKIN DEEP is the 14th studio album by blues musician Buddy Guy, released in 2008. The album features a number of collaborations including: The Memphis Horns, Willie Mitchell, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Eric Clapton, Robert Randolph and (!!!) Quinn Sullivan (Eight Years Old). It’s erroneous to characterize this 2008 Buddy Guy release, his first in three years, as a comeback, since he’s never been gone. But between a spotlight stealing performance in Martin Scorsese’s Rolling Stones concert flick Shine A Light in the same year and the appearance of Skin Deep, Guy has returned to the crossover arena as the magnetic and dynamic blues journeyman he has always been. Drop the laser anywhere on these dozen tunes, all but five authored or co-penned by the Chicago guitarist, and it’s like a blast of hot wind in the face. Even with drummer Tom Hambrige’s somewhat slick production, Guy is in your face, spitting out words with strutting swagger and peeling off molten licks that leave smoldering scars. Guests such as Derek Trucks and Eric Clapton seem like an afterthought, yet the former’s sensitive slide work on the titular ballad brings a crying gospel quality to the song. Trucks’ wife, Susan Tedeschi, makes a vibrant vocal foil on the mid-tempo "Too Many Tears," an obvious single. Roots guitar fans will thrill at the six-string intensity of the ferocious slow blues "Out in the Woods" where Guy unleashes torrents of raw sound that make this disc so consistently riveting and a highlight in the legend’s extensive catalog.

Guy is a blues man, not a protest singer, and when he wields his ax with perfect restraint over the organ and loping bass line of ''I Found Happiness,'' you best believe that's what he's done. SKIN DEEP is a return to form for Buddy Guy .... On the opening track, ''Best Damn Fool,'' Guy comes roaring out of the gate with a vicious guitar attack and a four-piece horn section blasting behind him. By the time SKIN DEEP was released in 2008, Buddy Guy was in his early 70s. The thing is, there are only a few tell-tale signs that Guy has aged any since his blistering work from the 1960s and '70s, and these signs-which include the slick, contemporary production, and the veteran-performer trend of having a parade of guest artists on the album - are largely superficial. In truth, Guy still plays and sings like the urban blues monster he remains. From the slinky, sexy opener, "Best Damn Fool," to the blues history lesson of "Who's Gonna Fill Those Shoes," to the slow-burn closer "I Found Happiness," Guy doesn't seem to have mellowed with age. In fact, he wails and shreds here with as much passion as ever. Eric Clapton, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, and Robert Randolph all lend a hand, but Buddy is in charge here, much the way he has always been.
