Born John Weldon Cale in Oklahoma in 1938, J.J. was pivotal to the development of what has become known as the Tulsa Sound - a style which combines blues, rockabilly, and country. He became somewhat famous in 1970 when Eric Clapton covered his song After Midnight and in 1977 Clapton also popularised Cale s Cocaine. Building on the success of After Midnight, Cale recorded Naturally - the first of his 14 studio albums. Clapton has stated that Cale is one of the most important artists in the history of rock, while Neil Young said in the biography Shakey; "Of all the players I ever heard, it's gotta be Hendrix and J.J. Cale who are the best electric guitar players." It would be hard to argue against either one of these claims. The superb recording featured on this CD comes from an FM radio broadcast of Cale's New Year's Eve performance in 1975, at Cain's Ballroom in the town in which he was raised, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Featuring a majestic set of J.J. Cale favourites taken from the albums he had released by this juncture in his career, along with a couple of cuts which at the time had yet to grace a J.J. studio record, all performed in an extended format, radically different from the album versions. This recording illustrates perfectly where J.J. Cale was musically by the end of 1975 and shows the direction in which he was moving for the next phase of his marvelous career.
