HARD KNOCKS is the twenty-first and penultimate studio album by Joe Cocker, released on 1st October 2010 by Columbia Records in Europe. It features nine new songs plus Cocker's version of the Dixie Chicks number "I Hope". A Limited Premium Edition (CD/DVD) version of the album was released in December 2010 in Europe with live tracks off the album recorded at Le Zenith in Paris on 10th October 2010. Joe Cocker comes up with a clean, shiny machine on HARD KNOCKS. Despite Cocker's trademark soulful rasp, this isn't an especially warm album. It's bright and bold, as hard and shiny as stainless steel, but there isn't a meanness to it: it's professional to its core, each note polished til it gleams, not one song outside of Cocker's wheelhouse. He pours his passion in, which may not be enough to liven up this buttoned-down upper-crust soul, but it is enough to keep things pleasant.

Good old Joe Cocker. He may have piled on the pounds over recent years but there’s nothing wrong with that gorgeous, gravelly voice of his. On this ten-track album, that voice appears against the backdrop of a superb collection of songs and the slick sort of Los Angeles production that throws those “rough diamond” vocals into glorious relief. The stand-out song is ''Thankful'' but there’s no shortage of great tracks, put together by some of the best in the business. HARD KNOCKS as a whole is more of a pop recording, much more so than Cocker's last few records. Recorded much like a demo, this one has no special effects or electronics. The British singer songwriter with the distinctive bluesy soul voice has been around the block a few times and has sold millions of records along the way. Joe have spent probably more time on the streets than being educated. Fans who’ve been around long enough to remember him all those years ago will probably understand the album title. Whether you fully understand it or not, the fact remains Cocker, with four decades of artistry behind him, is still standing strong. HARD KNOCKS is an absolute gem. This is an excellent outing from one of rock's greatest singers. Enjoy!
