UPFRONT is the sixteenth album recorded by jazz musician David Sanborn, released in 1992. This album focused on other soloists, instead of Sanborn’s alto saxophone being the primary instrument. Some key musicians on this album include guitarists Eric Clapton, Cornell Dupree and Hiram Bullock, tenor saxophonist John Purcell, bassist/keyboardist Marcus Miller, percussionist Don Alias and drummer Steve Jordan. It may come as a surprise to some that David Sanborn, the smooth-toned alto saxophonist who has become one of the most imitated players of the post-fusion era, got his start blowing red-hot blues charts with one of Paul Butterfield's better lineups. Certainly Sanborn has gone on to slicker, more technically challenging, horizons. This 1992 set is a fairly typical major-label moneyfest lined with big-ticket studio studs, an undoubtedly huge production budget and the obligatory celebrity walk-on (guitarist Eric Clapton). Marcus Miller plays bass and co-produces a lineup filled with studio vets like Richard Tee, Hiram Bullock, and Cornell Dupree, and the Uptown Horns get paid. It does sound like they all had fun. Directly following his adventurous Another Hand, some listeners were disappointed with the fact that David Sanborn did not permanently switch from R&B/crossover to creative jazz. However, UPFRONT is generally quite appealing and takes some chances within its genre. Although bassist Marcus Miller is once again an important collaborator, the emphasis is on "real" instruments, most notably the organ of Ricky Peterson. Other musicians in the backup groups include John Purcell on various reeds, trumpeter Randy Brecker, drummer Steve Jordan and guest Eric Clapton, who takes a guitar solo on "Full House." The most unusual selection is the final cut, a version of Ornette Coleman's "Ramblin'" that finds Sanborn, Miller, Peterson and Jordan joined by the avant-garde trumpeter Herb Robertson. Overall, this is an above-average effort from the highly influential altoist.
