Carole King- CITY STREETS- CD- 01.04.1989- Capitol Records, Inc.- 077779088522- 400 grn
CITY STREETS is the 14th album by American singer-songwriter Carole King, released in 1989. It was her first album after six-year hiatus from her recording career, co-produced by Rudy Guess who supported her as a backing guitarist in later years. The title track features a guitar solo by Eric Clapton. It was released as a single and became a Top 20 hit in the US Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. Clapton also played the guitar on "Ain't That the Way". Another notable guest musician is Branford Marsalis, who played the saxophone on "Midnight Flyer". This to be a great "comeback" album. It contains four songs by Carole alone (City Streets, Down To The Darkness, Lovelight, Ain't That The Way), two by Carole and former husband Gerry Goffin (Midnight Flyer, Someone Who Believes In You), two by Carole and co-producer Rudy Guess (Sweet Life, Legacy), one by Carole and Paul Hipp (I Can't Stop Thinking About You), and one by Carole and John Bettis (Homeless Heart). Featured guests (cameos) include Eric Clapton, Max Weinberg, and Branford Marsalis. A very smooth album…

Carole King's first album in six years also marks her return to Capitol Records, for whom she recorded from 1977 to 1980. She tries updating her sound, with aggressive guitars played on a couple of cuts by Eric Clapton, synthesizers, and drum machines, while singing lyrics that declare her renewed passion and hope. King was never one of pop's deep thinkers, which got her into trouble when she started going cosmic in the late '70s, but here she restricts herself to a kind of willed optimism and determination, and she sings as though she means it. CITY STREETS is thus King's most engaging record since her early '70s hits, and even if it's too late for her to reclaim her place in pop music, that's encouraging.
