B.B. King takes the stage for a once-in-a-lifetime performance with some of the music world's greatest stars (Gladys Knight, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Etta James, Dr. John, Billie Ocean, Chaka Khan, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Albert King, Paul Butterfield and more) to create an unforgettable evening of Red Hot Blues. A NIGHT OF BLISTERING BLUES, true, what a concert evening this April 15th was at the Ebony Showcase Theater in Los Angeles. So Mr King didn't just invite blues greats to the concert... All of them are represented in the opener "Why I Sing The Blues" as befitting their status, so you know straight away who you're dealing with. B.B. King announces everyone in turn, the audience is already enthusiastically celebrating everyone involved. The atmosphere among the spectators and musicians is unique. What a party was celebrated there. How does BB say King so beautifully after the first track: "...short talk and a lot of music..." It's gratifying that the small talk was included on the disc. 1987: B.B. King announces Stevie Ray Vaughan with the words "...new blood, new blood for the blues. Mr Stevie Ray Vaughan" and then directly his mentor Albert King. Together with Paul Butterfield (harmonica) they deliver a remarkable version of "The Sky Is Crying". Live, here you can hear one or the other feedback with an otherwise consistently satisfactory sound. SRV solo, one of the Kings solos, two guitars, three guitars, tempted to change the song title to The Guitars Are Crying. This thing has real jamming temperament. Paul Butterfield's harp inserts do the rest. If Dr John joins Etta James on "I'd Rather Go Blind" and we've arrived at one of the highlights. Do your best! Fantastic, these 6 minutes. Billy Ocean sings the blues along with Chaka Khan on "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby". Successful performance of the two with the help of a crisp horn section. Was Etta James in such a good mood: with what verve she sings "Something Got A Hold On Me", this dedication, this passion. The three ladies deliver a gorgeous, metal-melting edition together in "Ain't Nobody's Business". In between they are also heckled by a few, not by the spectators, but by B.B. King on stage, propelled. Before that "In The Midnight Hour" on which B.B. King also sings a verse. The atmosphere on stage and in the audience reaches one climax after the other. It's boiling in the hall. Lighters to light a cigarette can stay in the bag. The regular set, but what's already regular here doesn't get a more apt end to with "Let The Good Times Roll". This is where the joy of playing and a good mood come together. A cappella is introduced by the three women "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" and in between there is only sparse instrumental accompaniment. One highlight chases the next. On "A Night Of Blistering Blues" slackers become shopkeepers. Not at all, it's a song that just fades out. Is it a radio broadcast? 56 minutes playing time, could fit. So a big drop of bitterness at the end, because there was at least one more song. In contrast to this: what effect does a drop like this have in a 50-litre barrel of liquid? Nothing, nothing at all. An evening where the blues bubble like boiling lava.
