BY COLLECTORS FOR COLLECTORS Series.
2010 collection, the first ever non-French label release for this specific repertoire. Contains the essential Hallyday recordings, the perfect introduction to France's legendary Pop/Rock artist. CD originally released in 2006 when Mark Lamarr played Johnny Hallyday’s full-octane 1966 version of Black Is Black on his BBC Radio 2 show ‘Alternative ‘60s’ he wondered why there was no compilation of the French King of rock’s most powerpacked recordings. LE ROI DE FRANCE is that compilation. Johnny Hallyday burst onto the French scene in 1960 as France's veryown Elvis – even though he was born in Belgium. His rise was unstoppable, and with his future wife Sylvie Vartan he became the King (Roi) to her Queen of French rock. Britain recognised this in 2004 when key player in the arts Melvyn Bragg presented a ‘South Bank Show’ dedicated to Hallyday. LE ROI DE FRANCE pulls its cuts from the era when Hallyday had left the rock ‘n’ roll template behind and was recording red-hot, driving pop. He’s helped by a pre-Led Zeppelin Jimmy Page on the scorching Psychedelic and A Tout Casser. Mod titans The Small Faces back him on three cuts. British session legend Big Jim Sullivan is heard here too. Hallyday knew how to pick the right musicians for his records. It’s the first time Hallyday has been compiled for the English-language world. With no filler, it’s the perfect introduction, finally showing the rest of the world Hallyday at his most essential. First ever non French label release for this specific repertoire The Essential Hallyday, the perfect introduction, and every pop fan should have one Compiled by Mojo Magazine tastemaker Kieron Tyler endorsed in recent times by British media includes standout 60’s pop rock tracks featuring Jimmy Page, The Small Faces , Big Jim Sullivan. This 22-track U.K. compilation is the most determined effort to make his music accessible beyond the French border, focusing on his hardest-rocking output from the mid- to late '60s. Serious '60s collectors of all tastes, however, might be interested to note that "Psychedelic" and "A Tout Casser" include session guitar by then-Yardbird Jimmy Page; that three songs from early 1969 feature backing by the Small Faces (who also wrote the tunes, French translation aside), plus Peter Frampton; and that future Spooky Tooth/Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones was involved in writing much of the material, as he played often with Hallyday live and in the studio during these years.
