For KNOCKIN’ ON HEAVEN’S DOOR, reggae singer Arthur Louis welcomes rock guitar great Eric Clapton, who plays on nearly all of the album's songs, including the Bob Dylan-penned title track that he originally set to a reggae beat. However, the album really lives and dies with Louis, who is generally up to the task. In January 1975 Eric Clapton played on Arthur Louis's recording of KNOCKIN’ ON HEAVEN’S DOOR, which was arranged in a cross-over reggae style. After these recording sessions with Louis, Clapton recorded his own - nearly identical - version of the song which was released as a single in August 1975 two weeks after Louis's version. This is a good reggae album. If you like your reggae old-school, you'd like it. Good songs, good-to-great arrangements, Arthur Louis lead vocals are right out of the Toots and the Maytals school, and Eric Clapton as side-man does what he does so well: complements the song and the singing. Eric Clapton is not on every cut, and the ones he doesn't play on are the weakest. The album has one standout cut, the cover of Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door", and Clapton's work as a sideman (he doesn't play until his solo) is some of his tastiest ever. This one cut justifies the whole album, but there are lots of other good cuts. This album represents his first dip into reggae; it certainly seems to have helped Arthur Louis, because this is the last ever heard of him. According to Marc Roberty's "Eric Clapton: The Complete Recording Sessions", this recording by Arthur Louis was first released in Japan only as "First Album (With Guest Appearance By Eric Clapton)." In 1988, it was re-mixed by PRT (including giving more prominence to EC's guitar) and released as KNOCKIN’ ON HEAVEN’S DOOR that July. In 1999, it was released on CD by Pandisc / Music Avenue.
