Three CD set spotlighting the history of thie legendary Blues label who not only released the latest in British Blues bands but also issued new and long out of print recordings by many classic American Blues artists. 60 tracks by artists like John Mayall & Eric Clapton, Harmonica Slim, Bukka White, Hubert Sumlin, JB Lenore, Drifting Slim, Jimmy McCracklin, Savoy Brown Blues Band, 'Champion' Jack Dupree, Hound Dog Taylor, Peter Green & Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack and others. The current re-release of the compilation, which was originally released as a long box in 1997 and now in a thick jewel case, should be reason enough to present it in more detail. Well then, Blue Horizon, this is Mike Vernon. This label is always associated with this name, with the British blues boom of the 1960s. So it was and became the most influential of its kind in Great Britain. It all started when Vernon released a few singles with his "mailorder" company PURDAH, including recordings by John Mayall.(Bernard Jenkins b/w Lonely years). Then in 1966, Vernon formed BLUE HORIZON. The first recordings were again singles and licensed releases by American blues bands, some of whose recordings were from the 50s, such as Eddie Boyd, Little Mack, Magic Sam, J.B. Lenoir (here as J.B. Lenore) etc... Vernon then probably achieved the greatest success with the commitment of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. There was also a distribution partnership with CBS. In addition to well-known artists and interpretations, this compilation, which Vernon took into his own hands, also includes one or the other rare piece, which of course makes the collector's heart beat faster. On 3 CDs you will find a wonderful overview of this label from the years 1965-1970, including the PURDAH releases.
COMPILATION INCLUDES:
CD1- The Pre CBS Years;
CD2- The CBS Years Part One;
CD3- The CBS Years Part Two.
Then you'll love this. A marvellous 3 disc set of recordings covering the first part of the Blue Horizon labels existance from 1965 to 1970. With 70 tracks, from some frankly very obscure blues artists, to some of the most famous, like Eric Clapton and Fleetwood Mac this covers all the bases. The set is lovingly put together with extensive sleeve notes by Mike Vernon, Blue Horizons producer from the era concerned. These notes have far more detail and historic photographs of the artists and labels than can tell you about. Ultimately its the music that counts though, and in that respect, unless you are a completist who wants to buy every album Blue Horizon ever produced, this is a great collection to own. Particularly like to emphasize the following for purely subjective reasons: J.B. Lenoir (Lenore) with his wonderful "Mojo Boogie", once only found on the "Story of the Blues" (P.Oliver), the PURDAH recordings by Mayall with a very young Clapton, "Christine" by Hound Dog Taylor, nice that Vernon paid tribute to him here with this early recording of the musician, the recordings of Bobby Parker with an unleashed Jimmy Spruill on guitar, and – of course – of course somehow all the other recordings too. A terrific work, now available a little cheaper, and hope the fine book from 1997 is still there....
