DECCA UK RELEASE Version.
LOOKING BACK is the seventh album released by John Mayall in August 1969 by Decca Records. The album features songs by both John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and John Mayall solo work. Reasonably interesting collection of non-LP singles from 1964 to 1968, featuring almost all of the notable musicians that passed through The Bluesbreakers throughout the decade. "Sitting in the Rain" (with Peter Green) showcases fine fingerpicking, the haunting "Jenny" is one of Mayall's best originals, and "Stormy Monday" is one of the few cuts from 1966 that briefly featured both Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce. The rest is largely passably pleasant and doesn't rank among Mayall's finest work.

LOOKING BACK is a small compilation of some of the 45s that John Mayall's Bluesbreakers recorded between April 1964 and December 1969. This is just a straight re-release of the original vinyl release from 1969. However, it does have extended liner notes commenting on some of the band members, the tracks recorded on this release, as well as some of his other recording sessions during this period. One of the interesting things about this release, is, that while it contains 11 tracks, they were recorded by many different versions of his band. So you can see the evolution of the sound of the band, through the rapidly changing personnel involved. John Mayall covers a lot of older material in both his live shows and studio recordings. And when he isn't covering older tunes, he is writing similar style tunes. This re-issue doesn't list the author of the songs, but recognize at least one as being a cover tune (Stormy Monday). Confusingly, there are two different albums with the title LOOKING BACK: a Decca UK release as a single album (SKL 5010) and a Decca Germany (issued by TELDEC) release as a double album (DS 3104/1-2). Later issues on CD would use the Deram label. The German Decca release was a double album, whilst the UK Decca release only featured Eric Clapton on one track. However, the German release did not have the title track in its track listing, and the songs are not as rare, with several songs ("Parchman Farm", "Double Crossing Time", "The Super-Natural", "Steppin' Out", "Ramblin' On My Mind", "The Death Of J. B. Lenoir", "Checking Up On My Baby", and "I Can't Quit You Baby") already released on The Bluesbreakers' studio albums (Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton, A Hard Road, and Crusade).
