There are Deluxe Editions, and then there are Super Deluxe Editions. This 4-disc box (3 CDs, 1 Blu-ray audio disc) of Cream’s 1966 debut certainly falls into the latter category. Even if the set hadn’t proclaimed itself as super, surely the content would’ve warranted the description. This is as complete an overview as possible of a record that in its original vinyl incarnation contained a mere 38 minutes of music. FRESH CREAM is the first album by Cream, released in 1966. Laid down at the height of the UK blues boom, FRESH CREAM covers the kind of territory you might expect from three of the most respected players on the scene at the time. With Clapton fresh just from his time with John Mayall, Ginger Baker leaving behind the R'n'B backwaters of Graham Bond Organisation, and a woefully under-employed Jack Bruce hightailing it from the increasingly pop-leaning Manfred Mann, the electric blues was their natural turf. Highlights include the racing harmonica work-out, and the call and response excitements on Muddy Waters’ “Rollin’ and Tumblin’”, a spine-tingled vocal on the Willie Dixon classic, “Spoonful”, as well as the self-penned “Sleepy Time Time” which gives Clapton a free hand to wake up all and sundry. The traditional standard, "Cat’s Squirrel" is given a rousing treatment, showing how well these players meshed. The Super Deluxe Edition of Cream's debut album FRESH CREAM offers three CDs and one Blu-ray Audio disc with a treasure trove of extras. In addition to mono and stereo mixes of the original U.K. album, the set includes a myriad of mono single and EP material (including two ultra-rare French mono EPs), seven brand-new stereo remixes of album tracks and ten unreleased outtakes, and four complete and unedited BBC Session appearances in 1966 and 1967. The Blu-ray Audio features 24/96 KHz high-resolution mixes of the U.S. album running order in stereo and mono, plus U.K. album track "Spoonful" and non-LP tracks "Wrapping Paper" and "The Coffee Song," also in stereo and mono. This edition is packed in a gatefold slipcase with a 64-page hardcover book featuring liner notes written by David Fricke. (The outer slipcover features the U.K. design of the album front, while the inner package features the slightly altered U.S. cover.) The first two CDs present the album as it was sequenced, in mono and stereo formats, respectively. Then, each offers the singles issued to coincide with the LP, as well as the French EP version sourced from vinyl, and new stereo mixes. Disc three contains early sessions, outtakes, and alternate mixes, plus BBC sessions that include an interview with guitarist Eric Clapton. The Blu-ray audio holds the mono and stereo versions of the album and singles in 24/96 Hi Resolution. Maybe to some Clapton was God, but his eminence did not prevent a brief period sporting an unfortunate perm, as one of the photos in the terrific companion book illustrates. FRESH CREAM was, for sure, fresh, but not without peers. All in all, it would be hard to imagine that anything is left to hear or say about this revolutionary debut record. Everything is here that a fan could want or need, sounding as innovative and influential now as it did 50 years ago. FRESH CREAM is certainly super, and, definitively, deluxe.
