GOODBYE (also called GOODBYE CREAM) is the fourth and final studio album by Cream, with three tracks recorded live, and three recorded in the studio. The album was released on 5th February 1969 after Cream disbanded in November 1968. The first band to be considered a 'supergroup', Cream was at their commercial peak when they recorded Goodbye - their last album before breaking up in 1969. Originally released in 1969, Goodbye features their last hit single Badge (co-written by Eric Clapton and George Harrison). Produced by Felix Pappalardi by arrangement with Robert Stigwood, half of this album was recorded live in concert and the other half features some of Cream's most exquisite studio work.
PERSONNEL: Eric Clapton – guitars (all tracks), lead vocals, backing vocals; Jack Bruce – bass guitar, lead vocals, piano, organ; Ginger Baker – drums, backing vocals, percussion; L'Angelo Misterioso (George Harrison) – rhythm guitar; Felix Pappalardi – piano, mellotron, bass.
Rock's first great power trio went out with a bang. They were at their thrilling live best on Politician and I'm So Glad and came up with two more stellar originals: What A Bringdown and the hit Badge (co-written with George Harrison). At the time, they were barely speaking to each other, the long-standing feud between Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker having reached its peak and Eric Clapton having withdrawn from his role as mediator, tired of the whole thing. You wouldn’t know it from their playing, though, which is filled with the sort of heady back-and-forth that could elevate even the most basic blues material to the sophistication of a great jazz trio—if a lot louder. Jack once said that Cream was actually a jazz band “. . . we just didn’t tell Eric.”
