You can definitely hear Clapton through out the different songs. There are no shortage of quality Yardbirds retrospectives, but this 1999 release from the Recall label is pretty stacked. It's got 36 tracks spread over two CDs that include the classics ("Shapes of Things," "For Your Love," "I'm a Man," etc.), various covers and eight live tracks, but is pretty scant on liner notes. Rhino's 52-track ULTIMATE! is still the best anthology to date, but this ULTIMATE COLLECTION would make a great find used or in a cutout bin. A lot of silly things were recorded at the peak of the 1960s Psychedelic era as rock artists began to see the recording studio as a huge canvas with unlimited potential. This double-disc, 36-track set of British psychedelia more or less proves the point that excess doesn't necessarily make songs better, although a few things shine through the murk here, like The Yardbirds' masterful "Shapes of Things," but most of what is collected here falls into the interesting but still minor ephemera category.
