This is not, strictly speaking, a John Mayall album, but rather a various artists album containing among its 14 (plus two bonus tracks) selections six recorded by Mayall, plus four tracks by Otis Spann, two by Champion Jack Dupree, and two by Curtis Jones. The three expatriate Americans had been recorded in sessions with British backup musicians, including Eric Clapton and Mayall himself. The Mayall tracks include two solo performances, one credited to the duo of Mayall and "Steve Anglo" (Steve Winwood), two pairing Mayall and Clapton, and one with Peter Green. Most of the playing is low-key blues, and Mayall holds his own with the homegrown competition. This is a compilation album of leftovers from "proper" albums by some of the artists, and as such is a mish mash. However, the great performances by Otis Spann and Champion Jack Dupree make this album worth every penny. Otis was one of the absolutely best blues pianists, and a fine vocalist, too. With the backing of "Brother" Muddy Waters, guitar, Ransom Knowling (bass), and Little Willie Smith (drums), he performs outstanding versions of the songs "Pretty Girls Everywhere", "Country Boy" (by Muddy Waters), "My Home In The Desert" (by an unknown), and "You're Gonna Need My Help" (another by Muddy Waters). It's pretty rural, but the guitars are electrified. Eric Clapton guests in the more upbeat "Pretty Girls Everywhere" and does a good job of it. Still, the slow tunes are the most captivating, with their deep blues feeling. Champion Jack Dupree and Curtis Jones are the other American blues performers. The British blues musicians take up the rest of the album. Eric Clapton's playing is notable, as is the playing of Peter Green. Stevie Winwood participates under the name Steve Anglo. Other well known names are John Mayall, John McVie (later in Fleetwood Mac), and Aynsley Dunbar (fine drummer, who later turned up in Frank Zappa's band!).
