Sonny Boy Williamson- LIVE IN EUROPE- CD- 16.11.2007- Music Avenue [Europe] b.v.b.a.- 5413992501939- 400 grn
Sonny Boy Williamson was, in more ways than one, the ultimate Blues legend. On the day of his death in 1965, he had lived long enough to have played with Robert Johnson at the birth of his career and with Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page at the conclusion of it. In between, he drank a lot of booze, wandered around the country, had a successful radio show for 15 years, reaped great success on European tours, and basically wrote, played and sang some of the greatest Blues ever stamped into black flat plastic phonograph records. His delivery was deviously evil and cynical, while his harmonica playing ranged from staccato, rhythmic bursts to powerful, impassioned storm blowing. His songs were brimming with biting wit, the lyrics often based on autobiographical occurrences. Though he borrowed his "nom de plume" from another well-known harmonica player, the man and his music were quite unique. In 1963 Sonny Boy Williamson was booked for his first European tour, as part of the American Folk & Blues Festival. The folk music boom at its height, Europeans were hungry for live performances by the great living Blues artists. Nearly forgotten at home, these artists faced passionately appreciative white audiences for the first time in their lengthy careers, and couldn’t get enough. Showman extraordinaire, Sonny Boy unleashed his bag of tricks and stole the show every night. He loved Europe and stayed behind in Britain after the rest of the tour package headed home. He started performing in the young British beat club circuit, touring and recording live records with the Yardbirds, the Animals, and a studio album with Jimmy Page and Brian Auger. While dignified and cool when performing in the American Folk & Blues Festival context, with the white Blues-Rock bands playing full blast behind him, he'd pull out every juke-joint trick in the book, and then some, and drive the audience into frenzy.
He never lived to see the days when Chess tried to convert their roster of blues singers into pop stars by uniting them with the most unlikely material and musical support, but in earlier days he had been quite happy to follow a similar route, by recording with such groups as the Yardbirds and the Animals, and a jazz band led by Brian Auger. Some of these efforts stand up better than others but Williamson did not care - as long as he was paid. Despite moving around extensively, he still maintained a home in the USA with his second wife Mattie Lee Gordon. He was back in Helena, appearing on the King Biscuit Show once more, when he died in his sleep in 1965. Apart from his skill as a harmonica player and singer Sonny Boy Williamson was also a ‘character’ and anecdotes about him are legendary, both among the blues fraternity and his fans in Europe. If he was difficult, contentious, and unreliable, he was also a charming man who played upon his reputation as an evil, dangerous, hard-living blues troubadour. His music reveals that he was also capable of being both sensitive and humorous. He will always remain something of a conundrum, but as an artist his stature is recognized and his fame deserved.
