Sonny Boy Williamson- BYE BYE SONNY- 2CD- 15.09.2006- Music Avenue [Europe] b.v.b.a.- 5413992501557- 500 grn
Aleck/Alex Miller - was born 5 December 1899, Glendora, Mississippi, USA, died 25 May 1965, Helena, Arkansas, USA. Being a man who would never compromise a good story by affording undue attention to veracity, and mischievous to boot, Sonny Boy’s own various accounts of his life were never to be trusted and led to much confusion. This artist was also known as Alex Ford (after his mother’s maiden name), Willie Miller, Little Boy Blue and Willie Williams. Often referred to as ‘Sonny Boy Williamson II’ he was, in fact, older than John Lee ‘Sonny Boy’ Williamson, whose name, and associated glory, he appropriated some time in the late 30s or early 40s. Why he felt the need to do so is odd in light of the fact that he owed John Lee Williamson nothing in terms of style or ability, and alongside the latter and Little Walter Jacobs, was one of the most innovatory and influential exponents of the blues harmonica. He was the illegitimate child of Millie Ford, but he took to using his stepfather’s name and by common association became ‘Rice Miller’. He mastered his chosen instrument (he could also play guitar and drums) early in his life and seems to have taken to the road as soon as he was able, relying on his skill for a livelihood. His wanderings throughout the south brought him into contact with many blues artists.

CD2- SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON WITH JIMMY PAGE & BRIAN AUGER: January 1965, Studio Recordings.
He may have appropriated the Sonny Boy name from an earlier US bluesman, but Rice Miller established himself as the real deal in this country by spending the last years of his life (he died in 1965) haunting Britain’s burgeoning R&B scene. Svengali Georgio Gomelsky had him play live with both The Animals and The Yardbirds, taping the performances in late 1963/early ’64 to produce the oft-reissued barroom blues that appears on the first disc of this set. The second reprises a less frequently heard 1965 studio session with Brian Auger, Jimmy Page and others which turned out to be Sonny Boy’s last recordings. Cut in three hours without rehearsal, these eight brassaugmented tracks have an experimental edge and a freshness lacking in the live recordings, which were very much overawed young musicians attempting to follow their (rather drunk) idol’s performance to varying effect. Nicely packaged with period photos as this is, it’s hard to believe blues aficionados won’t own at least the contents of Disc One already.
