Thin Lizzy- ONE NIGHT ONLY: Live- CD- 2000- Steamhammer/SPV GmbH- 4001617219928- 400 grn
"Dedicated to the memory of Phil Lynott" is the motto of Thin Lizzy's live album. Phil Lynott, who founded Thin Lizzy in Dublin in 1970 together with Brian Downey and had hits like one of the most covered songs "The Boys Are Back In Town" or "Whiskey In The Jar", died three years after the band's farewell tour in 1986 England with heart failure, ONE NIGHT ONLY is dedicated to him. The album presents Thin Lizzy on their '99 European tour and is brimming with classics from the band's history. The striking two-part guitar work, which has at least indirectly influenced many modern bands, can also be heard, here you can clearly see where the roots of the two melody guitars lie in Metal. ONE NIGHT ONLY is a live album by rock band Thin Lizzy, released in June 20, 2000. Thin Lizzy had reformed in 1994 for a series of gigs marking ten years since the band split in 1984. Latter-day Lizzy guitarist John Sykes now took the lead vocal while Marco Mendoza was recruited on bass. The venture was popular enough to be repeated but by the time this album came out, original drummer Brian Downey had decided the affair was too disorganised and retired from the group leaving none of the original trio remaining. Keyboardist Darren Wharton also quit around the time of this albums release. The band, led by Sykes and Scott Gorham, subsequently continued performing with various lineups. This album features ex-Ozzy, Whitesnake, and Black Oak Arkansas drummer Tommy Aldridge. After Phil Lynott's death, Thin Lizzy sporadically reactivated with new band members. One of such periods was the years 1996–2009 and although the group did not release any studio album in 2000 they released a concert album from European performances recorded a year earlier. Must admit that the sound of the "new" band sounds extremely fresh and strong. A good and even concert album.

Throughout the '90s, several ex-Thin Lizzy members would regroup from time to time to play tribute shows for their fallen leader, Phil Lynott. Eventually, guitarists Scott Gorham and John Sykes (the latter of whom also supplied lead vocals) decided to form a full-time, new version of Lizzy, supplemented by Darren Wharton (who was also a member of Lizzy towards the end), as well as hard rock studio vets Marco Mendoza (bass) and Tommy Aldridge (drums). 2000 saw the modern-day Lizzy lineup issue a live set for the CMC International label, ONE NIGHT ONLY. Recorded a year previously, the album focuses primarily on songs from Lizzy's prime years (1975 through 1979), as only a pair of post-1980 songs are included. Although the group is expectedly proficient at handing in dead-on renditions of such classics as "Jailbreak," "Don't Believe A Word," "Bad Reputation," "Cowboy Song," and "The Boys Are Back In Town," it soon becomes apparent that an essential ingredient is missing [Lynott] which leads to a sense that you're listening to a Lizzy cover band. That said, one positive thing about ONE NIGHT ONLY is that it shows that the guitar talents of Sykes and Gorham still remain intact all these years later, as evidenced by the slow-burning ballad "Still in Love With You" and the album-closing six-string showcase, "Black Rose." With Lizzy having already handed in their definitive in-concert statement long ago (1978's stellar Live And Dangerous), the whole point of ONE NIGHT ONLY is somewhat unclear.
